PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Laphroaig Oak Select Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a peat-infused Islay single malt that serves as one of the more approachable introductions to the famously smoky Laphroaig house style. It balances its signature peat smoke with sweetness and layered oak influence from a mix of matured casks, making it accessible to both seasoned peat fans and newcomers curious about peated Scotch.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Produced on Islay, Scotland, by the historic Laphroaig Distillery (founded 1815), Oak Select is non-age-statement (NAS) and crafted from 100 % malted barley distilled in traditional copper pot stills. Its character comes not from age but from a complex multi-cask maturation approach: portions of spirit are matured in Oloroso sherry butts, Pedro Ximénez sherry hogsheads, first-fill bourbon casks, quarter casks, and finished in virgin American oak barrels. This blend of cask types contributes to the whisky’s blend of peat smoke, fruit sweetness, and oak spice.
The Oak Select name distinguishes it from the older Select bottling while retaining the same recipe and intent: to offer a softer, more balanced Laphroaig experience that still nods to the distillery’s coastal identity.
Critics Reviews
Although there are no widely published professional numeric scores from major spirits authorities for Oak Select, its Gold Medal placements at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2020 and 2022 validate its quality and broad appeal among tasting panels.
Among whisky commentators and enthusiasts, Oak Select is often described as a gentler peat expression relative to Laphroaig’s core core range (like the 10 Year or Quarter Cask)—making it a useful introductory dram for those exploring peated Islay whisky and for occasions where a heavy medicinal style might feel overwhelming.
Tasting Profile
Nose: Aromatics combine classic Islay peat smoke with ripe red fruit, citrus zest, and floral notes, supported by gentle oak influence from the virgin American oak finish.
Palate: Initially sweet and approachable, featuring caramel and vanilla, then evolving into mellow peat smoke, ash, and coastal seaweed character with hints of oak spice and citrus. The multi-cask maturation softens the impact of smoke without erasing its presence.
Finish: Medium and floral, with lingering peat, a touch of marzipan sweetness, and light lime zest that rounds out the gentle smoky residue.
