Dr. George B. Crane planted this exact piece of ground in 1858 — more than a decade before the term "Napa Valley wine country" would have meant anything to anyone, in a city, St. Helena, that was barely a town at the time. More than 165 years later, that same vineyard is producing what its own winemaking team calls, without qualification, "certainly one of the greatest bottlings we've ever produced." This is the Lithology Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon — the most beguiling, the most elegant, and by the estate's own description, the wine that most fully embodies the balance and gracefulness the entire Lithology project is built around.
The winemaking team — Philippe Melka, Michel Rolland, and Matt Sands, three of the most decorated names working in Napa Valley today — describes the Dr. Crane bottling as a wine that "walks the line of vibrancy and power, delicacy aligned with richness and depth." It is built from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc, raised mostly in oak with a smaller stainless steel component, finished in 70 to 75% new French oak — a higher proportion than almost any other single-vineyard wine in the portfolio, calibrated specifically to the concentration this site consistently delivers. Only 88 cases were produced.
Jonathan Cristaldi, writing for Decanter, awarded 99 Points: "the full-bodied palate offers fine, intricate tannins that are assertive yet harmonious with the dark berry fruit. At the same time, a rich vein of iron-like minerality and earth mingles with a fragrant cedarwood, herbs and slivers of dark chocolate on a long satisfying finish. Polished, expressive, and delicious, all from an exceptional site in a terrific vintage." Robert Parker, writing for Wine Advocate, named the 2021 Dr. Crane his personal favorite among the entire current Bulgheroni lineup, awarding 97+ Points: "slightly smoky-oaky on the nose, offering pungent licorice and peppery notes over its deep base of cassis fruit. Full-bodied, it's rich and concentrated, with a long, plush, velvety finish." This is a vineyard with more than a century and a half of documented history, farmed today by some of the most accomplished winemakers in California, producing one of the rarest and most acclaimed single-vineyard Cabernets in the entire Lithology collection.
The Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard sits just outside St. Helena, on land first planted by Dr. George B. Crane in 1858 — one of the oldest documented vineyard sites in all of Napa Valley, with a continuous viticultural history spanning more than 165 years. The vineyard is part of the Beckstoffer family's portfolio of historic Napa Valley holdings, supplying fruit to some of the valley's most celebrated producers. At Lithology, Dr. Crane fruit is vinified separately as a true single-vineyard expression, distinct from the estate's broader Lithology bottling and from the To Kalon and Las Piedras single-vineyard wines that complete the collection.
Lithology itself is the project of Alejandro Bulgheroni, the Argentinian-Italian businessman whose career in industrial engineering and global energy gave him an unusual and profound appreciation for soil and terroir before he turned to winemaking. He purchased the St. Helena estate at the base of Howell Mountain in 2014 — ground that includes an original stone winery once used by Bill Harlan as the founding location for both Promontory and the first vintages of The Napa Valley Reserve, on land that was once part of the historic 1841 Rancho Carne Humana Mexican land grant. Bulgheroni assembled a winemaking team that few estates anywhere can match: Philippe Melka, whose consulting work spans Dominus, Bond, and Bryant Family Vineyard; Michel Rolland, the legendary Bordeaux-trained consultant whose influence on fine wine production spans six continents; and estate winemaker Matt Sands.
The 2021 Dr. Crane Cabernet Sauvignon is built from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc, the fruit brought up mostly in oak barrels with roughly a fifth of the blend aged in stainless steel to preserve freshness and fruit purity. The wine then finishes its maturation in 70 to 75% new French oak — the house's standard practice for this specific site, a proportion higher than most of the broader Lithology range, deliberately calibrated to the exceptional concentration and structure Dr. Crane fruit consistently delivers. The wine was released February 1, 2024, with only 88 cases produced — making it one of the scarcest single-vineyard bottlings in the entire Lithology collection.
Decanter (Jonathan Cristaldi) — 99 Points:
"The full-bodied palate offers fine, intricate tannins that are assertive yet harmonious with the dark berry fruit. Robert Parker / Wine Advocate — 97+ Points:
"My favorite of the current offerings from Bulgheroni is the 2021 Lithology Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard. It's slightly smoky-oaky on the nose, offering pungent licorice and peppery notes over its deep base of cassis fruit. Full-bodied, it's rich and concentrated, with a long, plush, velvety finish."
Estate winemaking team:
"Our Dr. Crane Cab represents the epitome of balance and gracefulness. The trademark lifted, floral nose, with blue fruits accented with berries, earth and spice, leads into a palate that walks the line of vibrancy and power, delicacy aligned with richness and depth, and is our most beguiling, and truly elegant, wine."
Nose
Deep, dense color reflecting the 70-75% new French oak and concentrated Dr. Crane fruit. A trademark lifted, floral nose opens the wine — blue fruits accented with berries, earth, and spice. Blueberries, black plums, blackberries, and cassis form the aromatic core. Slightly smoky-oaky character adds depth, with pungent licorice and peppery notes layered over the deep cassis base. Spring flowers and iron-like minerality add further complexity, alongside stones, mineral, and fresh tobacco.
Palate
Full-bodied, rich, and concentrated — walking the line of vibrancy and power, delicacy aligned with richness and depth, exactly as the estate's own team describes it. Fine, intricate tannins are assertive yet harmonious with the dark berry fruit. A rich vein of iron-like minerality and earth mingles with fragrant cedarwood, herbs, and slivers of dark chocolate. Incredibly full-bodied yet effortlessly drinkable, with ultra-smooth, velvety tannins carrying the structure.
Finish
Long, satisfying, and plush. The cedarwood, herb, and dark chocolate notes carry through to a long, satisfying finish — polished, expressive, and delicious. A positive, long, upturned close defined by velvety tannins and persistent minerality.
