PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Domaine Leflaive is, by nearly universal consensus, the most celebrated estate in Puligny-Montrachet — a family whose presence in the village dates back to 1717, formally established as a serious winemaking force by Joseph Leflaive (1870-1953) and later transformed under the stewardship of Anne-Claude Leflaive, who led the domaine from 1990 until her death in 2015 and converted the entire estate to biodynamic farming in 1997, becoming a genuine leader of Burgundy's broader biodynamic movement. Since Anne-Claude's passing, the estate has been managed by Brice de la Morandière, with winemaking under Eric Rémy (succeeding the legendary Pierre Morey), and Pierre Vincent, Anne-Claude's nephew, closely involved on the ground.

In 2004, the domaine expanded south into the Mâconnais, adding 20 hectares across Mâcon-Verzé and Solutré-Pouilly — the source of this Pouilly-Fuissé, drawn from old vines growing on ground that sat beneath a shallow Jurassic sea millions of years ago, now composed of fossiliferous loam and loamy limestone. The vineyards have been farmed biodynamically since Leflaive's original 1997 conversion, using organic preparations and plant infusions rather than synthetic inputs. Grapes are entirely hand-harvested, given a long, gentle pneumatic pressing, and the must rests 24 hours before spontaneous fermentation with native yeast in stainless steel. The finished wine ages twelve months in oak barrels, followed by six further months in small stainless steel tanks before bottling.

The 2023 vintage across the Mâconnais delivered, in the winemaker's own words, "wines of precision and energy," with "the hallmarks... consistent: limestone-driven minerality, citrus-brightened stone fruit, and the seamless balance that Leflaive brings to every appellation they touch." Wine Spectator awarded 91 Points: "aromas of honeysuckle, peach and baking spices draw you in, while orchard fruit, citrus and spice flavors hold your attention. Polished and harmonious, this white glides to the lingering aftertaste." Allen Meadows of Burghound matched that with 91 Points, describing "a markedly more floral-suffused nose" with "notes of lemon zest, spice and the essence of pear," a palate with "fine volume and intensity" that's "generous yet beautifully defined," delivering "excellent length on the very dry but not really austere finale," and noting the wine is "sufficiently compact to repay 5 to 8 years of keeping." As one retailer put it: "when well made, a Pouilly-Fuissé Village can come close to a Premier Cru" — and from Leflaive's own hands, that's exactly what this bottle delivers.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Domaine Leflaive traces its presence in Puligny-Montrachet to 1717, with the modern estate truly established by Joseph Leflaive (1870-1953), succeeded by his sons Vincent and Jo. Under the stewardship of Anne-Claude Leflaive, who led the domaine from 1990 until her death in April 2015, the estate converted entirely to biodynamic farming in 1997, becoming one of the defining leaders of Burgundy's biodynamic movement. The domaine is managed today by Brice de la Morandière, with winemaking under Eric Rémy, who succeeded Pierre Morey, and Pierre Vincent, Anne-Claude's nephew, closely involved in the estate's day-to-day work.

In 2004, Domaine Leflaive expanded into the Mâconnais, acquiring 20 hectares across Mâcon-Verzé and Solutré-Pouilly. This Pouilly-Fuissé is sourced from old vines grown on ground that sat beneath a shallow Jurassic sea millions of years ago, now composed of fossiliferous loam and loamy limestone — soils farmed biodynamically using organic preparations and plant infusions since the estate's broader 1997 conversion. Grapes are entirely hand-harvested, undergo a long and gentle pneumatic pressing, and the must rests 24 hours before spontaneous fermentation with native yeast in stainless steel tanks. The finished wine ages twelve months in oak barrels, followed by six further months in small stainless steel tanks, before bottling.

Critics Reviews

Wine Spectator — 91 Points:
"Aromas of honeysuckle, peach and baking spices draw you in, while orchard fruit, citrus and spice flavors hold your attention. Polished and harmonious, this white glides to the lingering aftertaste. Drink now through 2030."

Allen Meadows, Burghound — 91 Points:
"A markedly more floral-suffused nose reflects notes of lemon zest, spice and the essence of pear. There is fine volume and intensity to the generous yet beautifully defined medium-bodied flavors that deliver excellent length on the very dry but not really austere finale. Note that this fine effort is sufficiently compact to repay 5 to 8 years of keeping. Drink (from) 2029+."

Domaine Leflaive (winemaker's notes, house style):
"The 2023 vintage delivered wines of precision and energy throughout the Mâconnais. Across this range, the hallmarks are consistent: limestone-driven minerality, citrus-brightened stone fruit, and the seamless balance that Leflaive brings to every appellation they touch. These are wines ready to open now and reward through the early part of the next decade."

Vaucluse Cellars (extended context):
"The result is a 2023 vintage with remarkable balance, structure, and excellent concentration. When well made, a Pouilly-Fuissé Village can come close to a Premier Cru. And while already excellent when young, it has the potential to become truly exceptional after seven to eight years of cellaring."
