The 2022 Block UU Chardonnay is a graceful expression of Santa Maria Valley fruit—powerful yet refined, with citrus brilliance, stony minerality, and subtle oak balance. It shows depth and clarity, built to impress now and reward cellaring.
Block UU is one of the most prized parcels within the historic Bien Nacido Vineyard, originally planted in the early 1970s. Its old vines yield low-cropped, concentrated fruit with natural tension and complexity.
The grapes are hand-harvested, whole-cluster pressed, and fermented entirely in barrel to build texture and nuance. The wine rests eight months on the lees, gaining creamy weight and flavor integration. About 25% new French oak puncheons are used, lending restrained toast and spice.
Foxen’s approach emphasizes clarity and authenticity—minimal manipulation, sustainable farming, and precision in élevage—allowing the vineyard’s cool-climate character to shine.
Nose: Lemon curd, green apple, and white peach lead the way, framed by almond, chamomile, and delicate floral hints. Subtle saline minerality adds lift.
Palate: Bright and focused, showing a mix of citrus zest, crisp orchard fruit, and stone fruit richness. The mid-palate is creamy from lees contact but balanced by chalky tension and refreshing acidity. Gentle oak spice and toast weave through the finish.
Finish: Long and mineral, with lingering citrus, hazelnut, and saline complexity. It ends clean, vibrant, and beautifully structured.
