Purlieu takes its name from a genuinely deliberate philosophy — "purlieu" literally means "the edge of the forest" or "an outlying area," a direct reference to the winery's Coombsville AVA home base at the edge of the entire Napa Valley, but symbolically the name reflects the estate's whole approach to winemaking: exploring the outskirts, navigating the boundary between innovation and tradition, confidence and restraint, depth and refreshment. This particular bottling comes from an entirely different, far more storied source: Beckstoffer's To Kalon Vineyard, sourced from legendary grower Andy Beckstoffer, who owns a substantial portion of this exact site.
To Kalon means "most beautiful" in Greek, and within Napa Valley's Oakville AVA, the vineyard is genuinely considered a "Grand Cru" of California — one of the most celebrated, sought-after single vineyard sources in the entire state. The soil here is predominantly clay loam, well-draining and genuinely stressful for the vines, producing smaller, more concentrated grape clusters as a result. Purlieu's own copy describes the resulting wines as "phenomenally rich, dense and powerful with an incredibly layered, silky texture," wines that are "alluring in their youth yet always reward patient cellaring." The wine is crafted by winemaker Julien Fayard, who brings more than two decades of winemaking expertise and a reputation for producing California varietals with genuine French finesse, treating "every cluster on every vine" as "an individual," receiving "the precise amount of both nourishment and stress needed to produce perfectly balanced fruit."
Vinous awarded a genuine 95 Points to this exact 2021 vintage. Wine-Searcher's own tracked critics average for the vintage lands at 94/100, reflecting genuinely consistent, strong reception across the broader critic landscape. This is genuinely serious, prestige-vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet — real concentration and structure from one of California's single most celebrated growing sites.
Purlieu 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is produced by Purlieu Wines, based in the Coombsville AVA of Napa Valley, California, under winemaker Julien Fayard. The wine is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Beckstoffer's To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, one of Napa Valley's most celebrated single-vineyard sites, owned in significant part by legendary grower Andy Beckstoffer.
The vineyard's soils are predominantly clay loam, well-draining and naturally stressful to the vines, concentrating flavor into smaller grape clusters. Bottled at approximately 14.9% ABV.
Vinous — 95 Points: "The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon is classic wine off this site, done in a decidedly extroverted style. Plum, crème de cassis, licorice, lavender and espresso abound in this deep, fleshy Cabernet Sauvignon. Best of all, the 2021 will drink well right out of the gate. There's no need to wait here."
