The Aberfeldy Red Wine Cask Collection launched in 2019 with a specific and genuinely unusual ambition: Malt Master Stephanie Macleod wanted to understand how flavors from red wine casks interact with and elevate Aberfeldy's aged malt — not as a theoretical exercise, but as a hands-on, cask-by-cask exploration of what happens when the Golden Dram meets the world's finest red wine cooperage. The collection has since taken Aberfeldy to Bordeaux, to Tuscany, to Argentina, and — in this specific and most immediately California-resonant expression — to the Napa Valley, whose Cabernet Sauvignon casks finish 18 years of Highland single malt into something genuinely unexpected.
The timing matters. After approximately 16 and a half years in a combination of refill and hogshead casks building Aberfeldy's signature honeyed, wax-and-citrus Highland character, the spirit rested for around 15 months in ex-Cabernet Sauvignon casks sourced from Napa Valley — California's most celebrated red wine appellation, the same ground that produced the 1976 Judgment of Paris wines that changed the wine world's understanding of what California could do. The Napa Cabernet casks that absorbed the spirit for 15 months carry that specific California Cabernet Sauvignon character into the whisky: the dark fruit weight of Rutherford and Oakville, the tannin structure that distinguishes Napa Cabernet from lighter red wine styles, the black cherry and cassis richness of the valley's most celebrated grape variety.
Whisky Advocate described the result with specific and genuine enthusiasm: "cherry, plum jam, black currant coulis, heather honey, and muscovado sugar on the nose — the Cabernet Sauvignon grape flavors are pronounced and layered over honey, malt, plum, tart blackberry, clove, dried fruits, and chocolate — a soothing, decadent drop with a velvety texture, the wine cask's influence steering a confident course through Aberfeldy's honeyed signature notes." Whisky For Everyone called it "another fine addition to the Red Wine Cask Collection — the increased age has elevated it above some of the previous releases — the balance between sweetness, fruitiness and spice is very good and makes for an enjoyable and decadent feeling whisky." Master of Malt found cranberries, toffee apples, floral honey, and oak spice alongside marmalade, vanilla, cinnamon, stewed apple, and coffee. Fine Wine and Good Spirits: "lush, bold, with a dominance of fruit — the wine's influence adds an air of opulence and a deepening of intriguing red berry aromas."
Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and Scottish Highland single malt. The most specifically California and the most specifically Scottish possible combination. In one bottle.
Aberfeldy Distillery was founded in 1896 by John and Tommy Dewar in the town of Aberfeldy, Perthshire, on the banks of the River Tay — using water drawn from the Pitilie Burn, which passes alluvial gold deposits on its way to the distillery and has given Aberfeldy its enduring identity as "The Golden Dram." The distillery is owned today by John Dewar & Sons, a subsidiary of Bacardi, under Malt Master Stephanie Macleod whose tenure has earned Aberfeldy more than 200 international Gold Medals and maintained the Royal Warrant held throughout Queen Elizabeth II's 70-year reign.
The Red Wine Cask Collection was created specifically around Macleod's passion for maturation and flavor development through wine cask interaction — an ongoing annual series that pairs Aberfeldy's Highland single malt with exceptional red wine casks from winemaking regions around the world. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon expression is one of the most specifically American market-relevant and the most directly California-connected releases in the series — drawing on the Napa Valley's most celebrated grape variety and cooperage for its finishing casks.
The 18-year-old Napa Valley expression begins with approximately 16 and a half years of primary maturation in a combination of refill casks and hogsheads — the patient, oak-conservative approach that allows Aberfeldy's natural honeyed, waxy, and citrus character to develop fully without wood domination. The whisky is then transferred to ex-Cabernet Sauvignon casks sourced from the Napa Valley for approximately 15 months of finishing — a period long enough for the Napa Cabernet's dark fruit, tannin structure, and vinous richness to integrate meaningfully into the spirit, but not so long that the wine cask overwhelms the 18-year Highland base. Limited edition, available in selected global markets.
Whisky Advocate, 92 Points:
"This Napa Valley addition to the series has a nose of cherry, plum jam, black currant coulis, heather honey, muscovado sugar, and well-integrated spices. The Cabernet Sauvignon grape flavors are pronounced and layered over honey, malt, plum, tart blackberry, clove, dried fruits, and chocolate. It's a soothing, decadent drop with a velvety texture, the wine cask's influence steering a confident course through Aberfeldy's honeyed signature notes."
Nose
Deep ruby-tinged amber — the 15-month Napa Cabernet Sauvignon finishing's most immediately visible contribution in a color richer and deeper than any standard 18-year ex-bourbon maturation alone produces. Cherry and plum jam open the nose with vivid, specifically Cabernet Sauvignon-derived dark fruit — warm, ripe, and generous. Black currant coulis adds the deepest and the most specifically cassis-forward secondary aromatic, the Napa Cabernet's most characteristic and the most recognizable grape contribution. Heather honey carries Aberfeldy's most enduringly characteristic Highland signature through the wine fruit richness. Muscovado sugar adds dark, treacly sweetness. Well-integrated spices weave through everything. Green apple, honeyed florals, and a dribble of honey round out the nose in the most characteristically and the most gracefully Aberfeldy way.
Palate
Soothing and decadent — the Whisky Advocate's most accurate and the most specifically memorable characterization of the palate. The Cabernet Sauvignon grape flavors are pronounced and layered — honey, malt, plum, and tart blackberry carrying the primary flavor complexity, with clove, dried fruits, and dark chocolate building through the mid-palate. The velvety texture from the wine cask tannin integration is the most specifically and the most immediately physical palate quality — smooth, coating, and luxurious in a way that pure refill-cask aged whisky of this age cannot typically achieve. Vanilla, cinnamon, and stewed apple from the underlying bourbon-influence cask component carry the most warming and the most specifically Highland secondary qualities. Cranberries and toffee apples add the most vivid and the most specifically fruit-forward tertiary dimension.
Finish
The finish evolves distinctly from the palate — juiciness, fruitiness and sweetness gradually fading to leave the wine cask oak influence to dominate. Tannins from the Napa Cabernet Sauvignon grip the tastebuds with the most specifically wine-derived and the most memorably red-wine-adjacent finishing quality available in any Highland whisky currently in the Blackwell's range. Late notes of cocoa powder and plum tart emerge at the very close. Long, increasingly dry, and warming.
