PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Aberfeldy was built in 1896 by John and Tommy Dewar — the brothers whose energy and commercial genius turned Dewar's White Label into one of the world's best-selling Scotch blends, and who needed a distillery of their own to make the malt that would anchor it. More than a century later, the distillery in the southern Highlands town of Aberfeldy still occupies the same site on the banks of the River Tay, still produces the honey-rich, full-bodied malt that the Dewars built their empire on, and still draws its water from the Pitilie Burn — the same source that earned the original site its reputation for producing some of the most naturally sweet and characterful spirit in the Highlands.

The Wine Cask Collection is Malt Master Stephanie Macleod's most specifically ambitious and most internationally collaborative project — a series of 21-year-old expressions, each finished in wine casks from a different producing region, each a dialogue between one of Scotland's great single malts and one of the world's great wine traditions. The Argentinian Malbec Cask Finish is the most recent and the most dramatically hemispheric conversation in the series — a partnership between Macleod and Daniel Pi, winemaker at Finca Ambrosia Single Estate winery in Argentina, whose Malbec French Oak casks received this specific batch of spirit for approximately eight months after its 21-year primary maturation in refill ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry hogsheads.

The batch was distilled on November 14, 2001 — a specific date on a specific cask entry record that is the kind of provenance detail that serious collectors rightly find compelling. It spent over two decades building the Aberfeldy character that The Whiskey Wash described as "true whisky mastery in a glass." Then the Malbec casks arrived and added their own voice: blackberry, plum, and black cherry, cocoa powder, violet flowers, leather, and sweet tobacco spice from the Aberfeldy team's own tasting note. Whisky Advocate found "dark chocolate, ripe cherries, clove, kaffir lime leaves, and sprigs of fresh rosemary — soft cooked fruits, toffee, vanilla, honey-coated mixed nuts, black currant purée, ginger root, cinnamon." Master of Malt found "raspberry purée, red grapes, and sage in a decidedly vinous direction, backed by delicate rose and parma violet — vanilla, buttery pastries, and honey keeping things creamy and very Aberfeldy."

Non-chill filtered. Natural colour. 46% ABV. From the distillery that John Dewar built to make whisky worth drinking for the rest of time.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Aberfeldy Distillery was established in 1896 by John and Tommy Dewar in the southern Scottish Highlands town of Aberfeldy, on the banks of the River Tay in Perthshire. The distillery was built specifically to produce the single malt that would anchor Dewar's White Label blend — one of the world's best-selling Scotch blends, with a particular stronghold in the American market — using water drawn from the Pitilie Burn, a source whose natural purity and specific mineral character have contributed to the distillery's signature honey-rich, full-bodied house style since the first day of production. Today Aberfeldy is owned by John Dewar & Sons, a subsidiary of Bacardi, and operates with an annual production capacity of 3.5 million litres alongside the revamped Dewar's World of Whisky visitor experience.

The specific batch of spirit used for the Argentinian Malbec Cask Finish was distilled on November 14, 2001, and matured for over two decades in a combination of refill ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry hogsheads — the standard Aberfeldy primary maturation approach that builds the honey, toffee, and dried fruit character that defines the house at its most complete. After 21 years, Malt Master Stephanie Macleod — one of the most respected and the most widely recognized female Master Distillers in the Scotch whisky industry — selected this specific batch for finishing in partnership with Daniel Pi, winemaker at Finca Ambrosia Single Estate winery in Argentina.

Finca Ambrosia is an Argentine winery whose Viña Unica expression was aged in the specific French oak casks now used to finish Aberfeldy's spirit — French oak, not the American oak more commonly associated with Malbec in the Mendoza region, whose tighter grain and more subtle tannin contribution interacts more delicately with the spirit than American cooperage would. The finishing period lasted approximately eight months — long enough to impart the Malbec's specific dark fruit and floral character, short enough to preserve the 21-year Aberfeldy base's primacy in the glass. The whisky is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered, and of natural colour — the most transparent and the most quality-confident production statement available for any aged Scotch expression.

Critics Reviews

Whisky Advocate 91 Points:
"Dark chocolate, ripe cherries, clove, and evolving notes of kaffir lime leaves and sprigs of fresh rosemary. Flavors of soft cooked fruits, toffee, vanilla, honey-coated mixed nuts, black currant purée, ginger root, cinnamon, and hints of citrus before finally settling on a vanilla caramel note. The finish is long, with red apple, vanilla, and peppercorn. From a robust wine, the ginger and spice flavor indicate this finishing cask has produced an equally robust whisky."

The Whiskey Wash:
"The depth and mature nature of the Aberfeldy 21-Year-Old Argentinian Malbec Cask Finish cannot be denied — it is true whisky mastery in a glass. A symphony of flavors that showcases once again this distillery's ability to make use of unique red wine barrels from around the world to finish already exceptional Scotch."

Whisky For Everyone:
"Deep gold with a reddish amber tint. Caramel, fresh apricot and candied orange rise first, joined by milk chocolate, dried cranberry, floral notes, espresso coffee, vanilla fudge and freeze dried raspberries. On the palate, instantly rich and malty — bittersweet cereals, sweet caramel, juicy apricot and dark dried fruits: raisin and sultana. The finish carries gingerbread and cinnamon bark with heavy tannins from the ex-red wine casks. A delicious single malt that shows what ex-red wine casks can offer."

Aberfeldy / Finca Ambrosia official tasting notes:
"Nose: Developing with ripe strawberries, drizzled in Highland Honey and delicately sharpened with notes of blackcurrant. Melting to floral notes of rose and violet. Palate: Settling on the palate the fruit sings and rejoices, soothing to a creamy vanilla and endlessly smooth finish. Finish: The experience culminates in an endlessly smooth and soothing finish, where the creamy vanilla lingers, accompanied by the joyful song of fruits."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Deep gold with a reddish amber tint — the 21 years in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks plus eight months in Malbec French oak producing a color of genuine maturity touched by the wine cask's characteristic warm red undertone. Caramel, fresh apricot, and candied orange open the nose with the distinctly Highland honey character that Aberfeldy has been building for 21 years in this specific batch. Raspberry purée, red grapes, and sage arrive in a decidedly vinous direction — the Finca Ambrosia Malbec cask's most directly aromatic contribution. Rose and parma violet add delicate floral lift, with vanilla and buttery pastries keeping the nose creamy. Milk chocolate, dried cranberry, espresso coffee, vanilla fudge, and freeze-dried raspberries add the most complex and the most layered tertiary aromatic dimension of any expression in the Wine Cask Collection series. A hint of ripe strawberries and Highland honey — the Aberfeldy house character most directly and most memorably apparent — thread through everything.

Palate
Rich, malty, and instantly rewarding — the 21-year base giving the palate a maturity and authority that the wine finish can build on rather than carry alone. Bittersweet cereals come to the fore first, followed by sweet caramel, juicy apricot, and dark dried fruits — raisin and sultana building the most warming and the most specifically aged secondary flavor dimension. Soft cooked fruits, toffee, vanilla, and honey-coated mixed nuts develop through the mid-palate. Black currant purée, ginger root, cinnamon, and dark chocolate add the wine cask's most specifically Malbec-derived flavor contributions — the classic Malbec aromatic register of dark fruit and floral complexity translated directly into whisky's vocabulary. Blood orange, ripe cherries, and a hint of espresso coffee round out a palate of considerable complexity.

Finish
Long, warming, and gingerbread-spiced — gingerbread and cinnamon bark carry the close most persistently alongside heavy tannins from the ex-red wine casks that leave the palate genuinely and pleasurably dry. Red apple, vanilla, and peppercorn persist through the long finish. The creamy vanilla lingers alongside the joyful song of fruits, as the distillery itself describes it — a finish that makes the wine cask's contribution most apparent at the very close, the Malbec's dark fruit and spice having permeated every layer of the 21-year base most deeply at the end. The finish is stunning — kissing the back palate with a dry red wine moment backed by a hint of smoke that drifts away incredibly slowly.
