Dan Kosta is one of the best-known names in California Pinot Noir. In 1997, he and Michael Browne founded Kosta Browne, which went on to produce some of the most sought-after Pinot Noirs in the world, including a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir that was the number one wine on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 in 2011. After leaving Kosta Browne, Kosta went on to AldenAlli and Convene, and in 2022 he launched Admire, an everyday-priced Pinot Noir made entirely from Sonoma Coast grapes, with a “simple idea”: to make a Sonoma Coast Pinot with the finesse and precision of his more expensive wines, but made for tonight’s dinner.
The 2024 is 100% Pinot Noir, harvested in early September, and aged nine months in French oak, 30% of it new. Dan Kosta and Shane Finley made the wine, and it comes in at 14.1% ABV. The Sonoma Coast, with its cool Pacific influence, is “a benchmark for New World Pinot Noir and an ideal canvas for Kosta’s measured approach.”
Kevin Vogt, Master Sommelier, wrote: “The Admire Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2024 offers a vivid interpretation of the Sonoma Coast. Aromas of red cherries, baking spices, spring flowers, and mandarin peel rise from the glass in an appealing bouquet. The palate delivers a spirited dance of bright red plums, tart cherries, and a touch of cola, supported by the appellation’s signature minerality and refreshing acidity.” A wine blogger scored the 2024 91 Points: “Ruby red in color. Charming nose of red fruits, cloves, baking spices and rose petals. Light to medium body with ample acidity. Crisp and fresh with elegant fruits. Strawberry, cranberry, pomegranate and earth on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. At the price point there are very few more compelling Pinots from the Sonoma Coast. Best over the next 2-4 years.”
For house-style context, the 2023 vintage was reviewed by the major critics: Wine Spectator scored it 92 and named it a Value Pick (“blood orange and morello cherry coulis notes show enticing succulence, while red tea and anise add range in the background”), Wine Enthusiast scored it 91, Vinous 90, and Kevin Vogt MS 94. The 2024 should be a fresh, early-drinking Pinot. It’s best over the next two to four years, and an easy match for roast chicken, salmon, mushroom dishes, and herbed chèvre.
Admire by Dan Kosta 2024 Pinot Noir is produced by DK Wines, founded by Dan Kosta (co-founder of Kosta Browne) in 2022, with winemakers Dan Kosta and Shane Finley. It is 100% Pinot Noir sourced entirely from Sonoma Coast vineyards in California, harvested in early September, and aged nine months in French oak, 30% new. Bottled at 14.1% ABV, 750ml.
Wine Enthusiast — 92 Points:
“Fresh Bing cherry, plum, wildflower, and forest floor aromas swirl on the nose of this Pinot Noir. The palate is neatly balanced, with plush tannin and zesty acid framing flavors of berries, cocoa, roses, and orange peel across a generous finish. This represents exceptional value for well-crafted Pinot.”
