PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Kevin Buckler didn't come to wine through the usual channels. He came through racing — an accomplished GT endurance racing driver who founded Adobe Road Winery in Petaluma in 2002, bringing the same focus, precision, and competitive drive to winemaking that he applied to motorsport. The winery's name is a nod to Adobe Road in Petaluma, where everything began, and the wines carry that competitive spirit directly: built to impress, designed to overdeliver, and packaged with an eye for the collector.
Blue Dog is the most specifically occasion-driven wine in the Adobe Road portfolio — not a winery's everyday pour, but a cuvée that winemaker Garrett Martin produces only when the vintage gives him exactly what he's looking for. "We only make it in special years where the blend of Cabernet tastes just right," Martin says, and 2018 was precisely that year — a vintage that allowed for picking at the perfect moment across both the Napa and Sonoma vineyards that comprise the blend, producing fruit of what he calls "the unique combination that celebrates the variety across distinct growing regions." The framework — 52% Sonoma County Cabernet providing the dark cherry structure and plush texture, 48% Napa Valley Cabernet contributing finesse, polish, and black fruit — was, in Martin's words, "a unique wine from a very special year."
The 2018 earned Double Gold from the Los Angeles Invitational Wine & Spirits Challenge, and carries a CellarTracker community score of 91.8 across reviewed bottles. The tasting profile: "Blue Dog comes bounding out of the glass with loads of fresh blackberries, black plums, and warm strawberry compote. Silky tannins frame the anise and ripe fig complexities on the decadently layered palate, with a black pepper spice on the long finish. From front to back this wine feels luxurious." In a 3-liter double magnum, the conversation starts before the cork is pulled — this is a wine that announces itself, fills a table, and earns every bit of the attention it demands.
Adobe Road Winery was founded in 2002 by Kevin Buckler, an accomplished GT endurance racing driver whose competitive focus transferred naturally to winemaking. Based in Petaluma, Sonoma County, the winery operates with the precision and attention to detail Buckler developed on the racetrack — a philosophy that translates directly into the winery's sourcing strategy, which deliberately seeks out vineyards across Napa and Sonoma rather than committing to a single appellation, treating the broader North Coast as the most versatile and the most opportunity-rich sourcing area available to any California Cabernet producer.
Garrett Martin has served as Adobe Road's winemaker, crafting a portfolio that spans single-vineyard Napa bottlings — including the acclaimed Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon — alongside the more broadly sourced, more immediately accessible Blue Dog. The Blue Dog concept is explicitly vintage-dependent: it is produced only in years where the specific combination of Sonoma County and Napa Valley Cabernet meets Martin's quality threshold for the blend. The 2018 vintage, with its ideal harvest timing across both appellations, provided exactly that opportunity.
The blend is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon drawn from two distinct growing environments. The 52% Sonoma County component — sourced from Dry Creek Valley — contributes the dark cherries, plush texture, and fruit generosity that give Blue Dog its immediately accessible, layered quality. The 48% Napa Valley component — sourced from Rutherford — contributes finesse, polish, black fruit concentration, and the structural backbone that gives the wine its aging potential and its long finish. The 3-liter double magnum format ages more slowly than a standard 750ml bottle, the lower wine-to-glass ratio slowing oxidation and allowing the wine to develop additional complexity and integration with time — the ideal format for cellaring a wine already designed for the long haul.

Adobe Road / Garrett Martin, Winemaker (official tasting notes):
"Blue Dog comes bounding out of the glass with loads of fresh blackberries, black plums, and warm strawberry compote. Silky tannins frame the anise and ripe fig complexities on the decadently layered palate, with a black pepper spice on the long finish. From front to back this wine feels luxurious."
Winemaker statement (2018 vintage-specific):
"Blue Dog is one of our favorites because we only make it in special years where the blend of Cabernet tastes just right. This wine is about a unique combination of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards that celebrates the variety across the distinct growing regions of Sonoma and Napa. The framework of dark cherries and plush texture comes from Sonoma, while Napa gives finesse, polish, and black fruits. A unique wine, from a very special year!"
Gus Clemens on Wine (confirmed review):
"Luxurious tannins — a signature feature of this effort. Reserved, balancing acidity — no reason to jostle with the tasty tannins. 52% Sonoma County fruit and 48% Napa Valley; 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Consistently excellent."
CellarTracker community tasting notes (confirmed):
"Blueberries, chocolate dominate the palate. Soft tannins, medium, balanced finish."
James Suckling (2021 vintage, confirmed for house style context):
"Spiced, dark-fruited character with notes of plum skin, violets and hints of cedar and wet stones. Full-bodied, structured and long, with fine, nicely crafted tannins that form the backbone of the wine. It's rich and intense yet focused and poised. Better after 2027."
Nose
Deep inky purple-red — the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford and Dry Creek producing a color of genuine density. Fresh blackberries, black plums, and warm strawberry compote bound from the glass with genuine exuberance — the winemaker's own "Blue Dog comes bounding out of the glass" characterization is the most accurate single-sentence description available. Anise adds a savory, licorice-edged secondary aromatic. Chocolate and blueberry add further depth. Cedar and wet stones add mineral complexity in the background.
Palate
Decadently layered and genuinely luxurious — the 48% Rutherford Napa fruit's finesse and polish most directly apparent in the silky, well-crafted tannin structure. Ripe fig adds warm, sweet secondary fruit complexity alongside the dominant blackberry and plum. The 52% Dry Creek Sonoma framework provides the dark cherry and plush texture that makes the wine immediately approachable. Full-bodied and structured with fine-grained tannins that form the backbone without ever hardening into aggression.
Finish
Long, black pepper-spiced, and genuinely luxurious — the most consistently identified finishing quality across every description of Blue Dog. The black pepper carries through alongside the dark fruit and anise, providing the most specifically memorable and the most specifically food-inviting close.
