PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

There is a hierarchy at every serious Napa Valley estate, and at the top of Lithology's hierarchy sits a wine that doesn't carry the winery name at all. It carries the proprietor's. Every year, Philippe Melka and Michel Rolland — two of the most decorated winemaking consultants working anywhere in the world — go through every barrel in the Bulgheroni cellar and select the absolute best. What ends up in this bottle is the result of that ruthless selection: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc, drawn from Beckstoffer To Kalon in Oakville, Bulgheroni's own St. Helena estate vineyard, and Beckstoffer Dr. Crane and Las Piedras, also in St. Helena. Only 212 cases were made. It is a wine that will never be repeated, because the barrels that produced it no longer exist in any other form.

Estate winemaker Matt Sands calls this bottling "the Burgundian expression of Cabernet" — the creme de la creme, chosen from what amounts to Grand Cru equivalents within the Lithology portfolio. The raw material includes some of the winery's finest Beckstoffer Vineyard fruit and estate grapes — lots that could just as easily have been bottled as single-vineyard wines carrying To Kalon or Dr. Crane on the label, but were instead reserved for this single flagship blend. It is, by the estate's own internal assessment, their greatest effort to date.

Vinous awarded 98 Points: "distinctly floral and lifted, with effusive aromatics playing off a core of bright red and purplish fruit — rose petal, lavender, sweet spice, new leather and cedar appear later, adding further shades of nuance. A dollop of Cabernet Franc really marks the wine, in a positive sense." Decanter found "an alluring bouquet dominated by luscious blueberries, ripe blackcurrants, and vibrant cassis, intertwined with sophisticated notes of tobacco, savory herbs, and a hint of spices." Aged 22 months in 72% new French oak. Needs four to five years of cellaring to show its full potential, but built for thirty-plus years of evolution.

Origins & Craftsmanship

The Alejandro Bulgheroni flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is produced at Lithology, the St. Helena estate Bulgheroni purchased in 2016 from Bill Harlan at the base of Howell Mountain — fourteen prime acres on ground that was once part of the 1841 Rancho Carne Humana land grant, with an original stone winery that had previously served as the Founders Room for both Harlan's Promontory and the inaugural vintages of The Napa Valley Reserve. Bulgheroni, an Argentinian-Italian businessman whose career spans industrial engineering and global energy before turning to wine, brought a profound and unusual appreciation for soil and terroir to the project, assembling a winemaking team that few estates anywhere can match: Philippe Melka, whose consulting work spans Dominus, Bond, and Bryant Family Vineyard; Michel Rolland, the legendary Bordeaux-trained consultant whose architectural influence on fine wine spans six continents; and estate winemaker Matt Sands, formerly of Promontory and Dana Estates.

This flagship bottling is the result of the most ruthless selection process applied anywhere in the Bulgheroni portfolio. Each year, Melka and Rolland taste through every single barrel in the cellar and identify the handful that represent the absolute pinnacle of that vintage's production — barrels of such individual quality that they are deliberately withheld from the single-vineyard bottlings (which carry To Kalon, Dr. Crane, or Las Piedras on the label) and instead blended together into one definitive statement wine. The 2021 vintage draws roughly half its volume from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville — one of Napa Valley's most universally revered Cabernet Sauvignon sites — with the remainder split between Bulgheroni's own estate vineyard and Beckstoffer Dr. Crane and Las Piedras, both in St. Helena.

The blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc — a proportion Matt Sands considers essential to the wine's identity, the Cabernet Franc lending lift, florality, and aromatic complexity that pure Cabernet Sauvignon alone cannot achieve. The wine ages 22 months in French oak barrels, 72% of them new — an unusually high new-oak percentage calibrated specifically to the exceptional concentration of fruit this barrel selection delivers. Only 212 cases were produced; once sold through, this specific wine ceases to exist in any future vintage.

Critics Reviews

Vinous Media — 98 Points (2021):
"In this vintage, it comes across as distinctly floral and lifted, with effusive aromatics to play off a core of bright red/purplish fruit. Rose petal, lavender, sweet spice, new leather and cedar appear later, adding further shades of nuance. A dollop of Cabernet Franc (10%) really marks the wine, in a positive sense."

Decanter:
"This gorgeous wine offers immense drinking pleasure from the first whiff to the last drop. A host of blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry fruit appears on the nose and palate. The tannins are impressively polished, and the finish is long and mineral-rich."

Matt Sands, Estate Winemaker:
Describes this bottling as "the Burgundian expression of Cabernet" — the absolute best barrel selection from each vintage's source vineyards.

Tasting Profile

Nose
Deep, inky ruby with an almost staining intensity and a bright sheen — the 72% new French oak and the 22-month aging on an extraordinary concentration of fruit producing a color of genuine density. The nose opens distinctly floral and lifted — rose petal, lavender, and flowery incense leading with an aromatic effusiveness that the 10% Cabernet Franc contributes most directly, lending the wine its specifically Burgundian lift within a Bordeaux-blend frame. Pure crème de cassis and black raspberry follow with vivid, concentrated dark fruit. Black cherry and mulberry add further depth. New leather and cedar emerge with air, adding shades of nuance. Madagascar vanilla and pencil shavings contribute the most refined oak-derived secondary aromatics. Dark chocolate and tobacco round out the most complex and arresting layers.

Palate
Full-bodied richness matched by a sense of weightlessness and precision — the most specifically remarkable quality of this wine, the concentration of three of Napa's most coveted vineyard sites carried with genuine elegance rather than brute power. Tannins are plush yet perfectly calibrated, framing blueberry, dark cherry, and violets at the core. Tobacco and toasted bread add savory complexity. Graphite provides mineral structure. The mouthfeel is lush, balanced, and memorable — silky and present without ever becoming heavy.

Finish
Extraordinarily long, with no hard edges and remarkable purity throughout. The finish carries the floral lift from the Cabernet Franc alongside the dark fruit core, resolving with genuine length and no rough structural moments — a finish built for decades of cellar evolution. Needs four to five years to show its full potential; built for thirty-plus years.
