Bangalore's intense heat and low humidity accelerate maturation dramatically compared to Scotland, but that speed comes at a brutal cost: evaporation rates running 10% or higher annually, versus just 1-2% in a typical Scottish warehouse. For this 12-Year-Old Chairman's Reserve, Amrut has reported an almost unbelievable total angel's share loss of roughly 82% across the full maturation period — meaning for every five casks that went in, something closer to one cask's worth of whisky survived to bottling. This is, genuinely, the oldest whisky Amrut has ever released, and quite possibly the oldest whisky ever aged a full twelve years anywhere in India.

The whisky is crafted from the finest Indian barley, matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, bottled entirely uncut at cask strength — 60% ABV — non-chill filtered and naturally colored. Production is extraordinarily limited: specific releases have run as few as 100 bottles, with a later 2021 edition expanding slightly to 240, each one packaged with two branded Glencairn crystal tasting glasses. Sugary, candied fruits, like a cocktail of tropical fruits. The standout fruit is oranges, but there's so much more going on as well. It keeps developing over time." Given all the intensity and power, water helps to unlock notes of milk chocolate, latte, purple fruit skins, plum flesh, Brazil nut, and bitter plain chocolate. Rather special. "Very hot on the palate on the first sip, but it burned so good. Then the tropical fruits came out. Passion fruit, papaya and mango. Hints of toasted oak, cinnamon and maybe nutmeg. Wonderful. Nose
Chestnut, chocolate orange, and vanilla essence lead, joined by licorice, espresso, and leather, alongside candied tropical fruit, particularly orange, and a rich, oily texture despite the whisky's considerable strength.
Palate
Silky smooth initially, with chocolate, cranberry, and peppercorn building into an epic, spicy peak, developing pomegranate, chocolate brownie, Americano coffee, and prune, alongside honey, coconut, and marzipan.
Finish
Long and warming, closing with lingering vanilla, dried fruit, and gentle spice — a genuinely remarkable balance for a whisky bottled at full cask strength.
