Lincoln Henderson came outof retirement in 2011, after threedecades at Brown-Forman shapingWoodford Reserve and GentlemanJack, to found Angel's Envy with hisson Wes and what he called a"roll dog" philosophy. The idea wassimple and at the time genuinelyunusual: take alreadywell-aged American whiskey and finishit in wine or spiritcasks that would add a distinct finallayer of flavor and complexity.Bourbon finished in port winebarrels. Rye finished in Caribbean rumcasks. Secondary maturation as a coreproduction philosophy ratherthan a novelty. Henderson didn'tlive to see how completely thatphilosophy won — he passed in2013 — but the distillery hefounded at 500 East Main Street inLouisville has never wavered fromhis original conviction.
Owen Martin, the second MasterDistiller in Angel's Envy history, has been refining and deepeningthat philosophy since joining thebrand in fall 2022. His mostcelebrated contribution to the caskstrength program is also itsmost specifically accidentalorigin story. The barrels thatbecame the 10-Year Cask Strength Ryewere originally intendedfor the core Finished Rye expression. After being transferred to Caribbeanrum casks, they were placed in the back of the rickhouse — and forgotten. When Martin discovered them, they had already been in the rum casks for two years beyond the standard finishing period. "They were absolutely delicious," he said to Maxim. "Rather than dump them at that point, I decided to make the call to keep them maturing. At four years finishing not only had they reached the 10-year overall time in oak milestone, but the integration of rummy brown sugar and the base rye spice was sublime."
The result is the most significant rye whiskey Angel's Envy has ever released: the brand's first age-stated rye at cask strength, distilled in 2013 and 2015, aged over a decade in a combination of new charred American white oak and Caribbean rum casks, bottled at 111.6 proof with nothing added and nothing taken away. Only 10,800 bottles exist— exclusively for the US market, released April 17, 2026, as part of the15th anniversary of the Angel's EnvyCask Strength program alongside theannual Cask Strength Bourbon. Medjooldate, brown sugar, and vanilla on thenose. Candied ginger, rye spice,rum-soaked pound cake on the palate. Afinish of molasses, tropical fruit, andsilky old oak. "Not made to meet adeadline," in Owen Martin's own words."Made to exceed expectations."
Angel'sEnvy was founded in 2011 by LincolnHenderson and his family in Louisville,Kentucky, and was among the firstAmerican whiskey producers to employ asecondary cask finishing processbroadly across its portfolio — atechnique borrowed from the Scotchwhisky tradition and applied toAmerican straight whiskey in a way thatdefined a new category. Henderson'soriginal two expressions — BourbonFinished in Port Wine Barrels and RyeFinished in Caribbean Rum Casks —remain the distillery's flagship coreofferings. The distillery opened at 500East Main Street in 2016, the firstfull-production whiskey distillery indowntown Louisville. Bacardi acquiredAngel's Envy in 2015.
Owen Martin, appointed Master Distiller in fall2022, has brought a finishing-forwardphilosophy informed by both Kentuckytradition and Scottish secondarymaturation practice. The 10-Year CaskStrength Rye reflects Martin's"precision and intent" most completely— a spirit that spent its primarymaturation years in new charredAmerican white oak building the graincharacter, structure, and spice of aproperly aged 95% rye mashbill, thentransferred to Caribbean XO rum casksfor what ultimately became up to fouryears of secondary maturation. Martin'sdecision to keep the accidentallyextended rum cask barrels rather thandump them proved definitively correct:four years in Caribbean rum casksproduced the integration of rummy brownsugar and base rye spice that Martinhimself described as "sublime."
Themash bill — 95% rye, 5% malted barley —is the same high-rye mashbill used forAngel's Envy's core Finished Rye, amash bill that emphasizes rye'scharacteristic spice, cracked pepper, and grain character as the primarypalate driver before the cask finishingadds its layer of sweetness andtropical richness. At 10 years ofcombined maturation and four years inCaribbean rum casks, this is a rye ofsignificantly greater depth andintegration than the core expression's18-month rum cask finish produces.Bottled at 55.8% ABV / 111.6 proof —exactly as it emerged from the barrel, unproofed, unfiltered, nothing added, nothing taken away — in premiumdecorative packaging designedspecifically for the 2026 Cask Strengthrelease.

Bourbon & Banter (2026 release review):
"Warm aromas of Medjooldate, brown sugar, and vanilla give way to candied ginger, rye spice, rum-soaked pound cake, and a finish ofmolasses, tropical fruit, and silky oldoak."
Angel's Envy official 2026 tasting notes:
"Nose: Brown sugar, vanilla, andcandied prune, then rye pops up withsignature mixed cinnamon spice, thenthe Caribbean influence with mango andtropical fruit revealing rum-soakedpound cake. Palate: Bold, velvety, andbrilliantly balanced sweet-and-spicytasting experience. Finish: Molasses, tropical fruit, and silky old oak."
Owen Martin, Master Distiller:
"Atfour years finishing not only had theyreached the 10-year overall time in oakmilestone, but the integration of rummybrown sugar and the base rye spice wassublime."
"Aged in both oak andCaribbean rum barrels for a combinedten years, this whiskey wasn't made tomeet a deadline; it was made to exceedexpectations, reflecting the time, intention, and evolution behind everydetail while staying true to ourfinishing-forward philosophy."
Maxim:
"An intenselybold, velvety, and brilliantly balancedsweet-and-spicy tasting experience."
Nose
Amber with caramel warmth — the decade inoak and four years in Caribbean rumproducing a color of genuine depth. Thenose opens surprisingly subtly for111.6 proof — warm aromas of Medjooldate, brown sugar, and vanilla arrivingfirst with an aromatic restraint thatbelies the whiskey's power. Candiedprune adds a slightly darker, moreconcentrated dried-fruit dimension.Mint, confectioners sugar, and mentholadd a bright, clean secondary lift. Then the cinnamon spice of the 95% ryemash bill arrives — the base grain'smost characteristic and the mostspecifically rye-identifying aromaticquality. Finally, with time in theglass, the Caribbean influencecompletes the picture: mango andtropical fruit leading intorum-soaked pound cake, the four yearsin Caribbean rum casksdistilled into a single aromatic momentof revelatory integration.
Palate
Bold, velvety, andbrilliantly balancedsweet-and-spicy — the 111.6 proofdelivering considerably morecomposure than expected, thedecade of maturationhaving integrated the alcohol into thespirit rather than leaving it toannounce itself aggressively. Brownsugar and maple syrup from the rumcasks form the base. Candied gingeradds warmth. Rye spice pushes throughwith genuine backbone — present andstructured rather than buried undersweetness. Rum-soaked pound cakecarries the Caribbean rum character'smost concentrated and the mostthoroughly integrated mid-palatecontribution. The palate texture shiftsfrom modest to rich with multiple sips, coating evenly from front to back.
Finish
Long, silky, andmolasses-driven — the finish thatcombines the 10-year American oak'smature wood character with the tropicalfruit and dark sugar of the Caribbeanrum casks in a close that feelsgenuinely complete. Silky old oakcarries the structural close. Tropicalfruit lingers alongside molasses. Therye spice that the 95% rye mash billbuilds from persists as the mostauthentically rye-whiskey quality inthe finish — present beneath the rumsweetness, confirming the base grain'sidentity even after fouryears in Caribbean cooperage.
