Archie Rose Straight Rye Malt Australian Whisky 750ml

Archie Rose’s Straight Rye Malt is not a typical rye. Most rye whiskey is made from unmalted rye, as in the American tradition, but Archie Rose malts its rye, treating it the way a Scotch distillery would treat barley. The distillery’s founder describes the difference as the whisky’s “point of distinction, evident upon the very first sip”: malted rye gives a lighter, more delicate and finessed spirit than unmalted rye, with the grain’s spicy, fruity character intact. It’s closer to a single malt made from rye than to a bourbon-country rye.

It’s also made from scratch, entirely in-house. Archie Rose Distilling Co. opened in Sydney in 2014, the city’s first new distillery since 1853, and this was its first whisky: the Straight Rye Malt was first released in September 2019 as the distillery’s inaugural whisky (formerly called Rye Malt Whisky), the result of casks laid down in its earliest years. The rye is Australian-grown and malted to the distillery’s specifications by Voyager Craft Malt in New South Wales, combined with malted barley, fermented and distilled in copper pot stills, and matured in charred virgin American oak, with oak air-dried for 36 months, in the maritime air of coastal Sydney. Nothing is sourced from another distillery. It’s bottled at 46% ABV (92 proof).

The distillery describes “rich notes of vanilla and caramel, balanced by the distinctive herbal character of Australian rye and warming spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.” The Whiskey Wash’s reviewer found “vibrant gingerbread, toast, burnt caramel, dried raspberries, lemon pith, ripe apricot and yellow peach, vanilla, dusty clove notes,” with a finish where “the spicy notes of gingerbread, pepper, raspberries, apricot, and vanilla are defined and sustained long,” concluding that it’s “a beautifully poised, precise, and inviting rye whisky that lingers on the palate,” and adding: “Just wish I had more to sip on!” Other reviewers describe a nose of “spiced custard, ginger, stone fruit and baked apple pie,” a palate like “peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce,” and a finish of caraway seed and sweet spices with “a hint of salinity.” One reviewer compared its nose to “a good sherried Speyside” rather than a rye, calling it “sweetly elegant, with no bombast.”

The awards back up the reviews. It has twice been named World’s Best Rye Whisky, and in 2026 it was named Rye Whiskey of the Year at the London Spirits Competition (“aromatic with rich dark fruit, spices, and cereal notes; full-bodied palate with dry spice, gingerbread, and a long, tannic finish”) and won Gold, the Consistency of Excellence Award, and Best Grain Whisky at the Australian International Spirits Awards. It also took a Gold Trophy at the 2025 Australian Distilled Spirits Awards and Gold at the 2025 World Whisky Masters.

Archie Rose is entering the US market this month, backed by actor Chris Hemsworth, who joined founder Will Edwards as co-owner in August 2026. It’s a whisky for rye drinkers looking for something softer and more fruit-forward, and for single malt drinkers curious about rye.
