PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Tokaji-matured Scotch remains genuinely rare, and that scarcity is exactly what makes this release worth paying attention to. Tokaji is one of the world's most celebrated dessert wines, made in Hungary from grapes affected by noble rot — a natural process that concentrates sugar, acidity, and flavor to an extraordinary degree. Highly regarded among whisky enthusiasts for the character its casks can impart, Tokaji wood almost never turns up in modern Scotch production, which makes this the distillery's first-ever venture into the style, and a genuinely noteworthy one.

Rather than lean on a short finishing period, Ardnamurchan built this release with real patience: 28 bourbon barrels of unpeated spirit, distilled back in 2018, were re-racked into Hungarian Tokaji casks in early 2024, giving the sweet wine influence real time to integrate rather than just sit on the surface. Two fully matured bourbon barrels were blended in alongside them, helping preserve the distillery's own signature coastal character underneath the Tokaji sweetness. The result is an 8-year-old single malt — the first Tokaji release from a distillery known for its subtly smoky, maritime house style, built on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, one of the most westerly points on the British mainland, and self-described as "Scotland's Greenest Distillery." Only 8,736 bottles exist worldwide.

The tasting notes converge on something genuinely luscious and layered. Abbey Whisky's description finds the whisky leading "with floral sandalwood and sweet pear before almond richness settles in," with "bamboo and white pepper" adding "a lively, funky edge that keeps things from tipping too sweet" — "characteristically Ardnamurchan: fruit-forward but with real personality underneath." Cork & Cask calls it "as luscious, funky and vibrant as you would hope," describing "floral sandalwood and sweet pear on the nose, with almond and a bright, funky thread of bamboo and white pepper lifting everything beautifully," the palate "rich and characterful," with the Tokaji influence adding "a luscious, honeyed complexity." Luvians' extended tasting adds "notes of pear, baked apple, sugared almonds and candied ginger," complemented "by floral nuances and a gentle coastal freshness, creating a whisky that feels both distinctive and unmistakably Ardnamurchan." Hard To Find Whisky describes "honeyed apricot, peach, citrus peel and soft spice, with a hint of coastal freshness" on the nose, "rounded and expressive" on the palate with "stone fruit, sweet malt, gentle oak and a touch of warming spice," closing "long and balanced, with lingering honey, fruit and soft peppery warmth." Bottled non-chill filtered, in natural colour, at 52% ABV. This is a genuinely exciting, patiently built first look at what Tokaji maturation can bring to Ardnamurchan's spirit.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Ardnamurchan Distillery was opened in 2014 by Adelphi at Glenbeg, on the Ardnamurchan peninsula — one of the most westerly parts of the British mainland. Adelphi had already built its reputation as a respected independent bottler before establishing its own distillery, designing Ardnamurchan as a modern West Highland producer shaped directly by its remote coastal location and a strong emphasis on sustainability.

The AD/ Tokaji Cask Release is the distillery's first venture into Tokaji cask maturation, made entirely from unpeated Ardnamurchan spirit. Twenty-eight bourbon barrels, filled with spirit distilled in 2018, were re-racked into Hungarian Tokaji casks in early 2024, allowing the sweet wine influence to develop over an extended period rather than a brief finish. Two fully matured bourbon barrels were blended in alongside them to help preserve the distillery's own coastal character. The finished whisky is 8 years old, bottled non-chill filtered and in natural colour at 52% ABV, with a total worldwide release of 8,736 bottles.

Tasting Profile

Floral sandalwood and sweet pear lead, joined by honeyed apricot, peach, and citrus peel, with soft spice and a hint of coastal freshness. Almond richness settles in, lifted by a lively, funky thread of bamboo and white pepper.

Palate
Rich and characterful, with baked apple, sugared almond, and candied ginger carrying real Tokaji-driven honeyed complexity. Stone fruit, sweet malt, and gentle oak round out an expressive, layered mid-palate, with warming spice throughout.
