Ardnamurchan is the most westerly point on the UKmainland — a remote,glacially-carved Highland peninsula onScotland's west coast where theland runs out into the Atlanticand the nearest significant town is along drive away on roads thattake their own time getting there. In2014, Adelphi — the respectedindependent whisky bottler — chose thisextraordinary and extraordinarilyimpractical place to build a distillery specifically because impractical places make exceptional whisky. The peninsula's maritime climate, the Atlantic-driven weather, the mineral-rich local water from the Carnoch River, and the specific microclimate of Glenbeg village combine into what the whisky world has rapidly recognized as one of the most distinctive and the most genuinely terroir-expressive environments for new Scotch whisky production in Scotland.
The distillery is also, by a significant margin, one of the most environmentally serious in Scotland. It runs entirely on renewable energy: hydroelectric power from the localburn and a biomass boiler fueled bywood from sustainably managed localforests. Nothing about the location, the ethics, or the productionphilosophy is conventional. And thewhisky is not conventional either.
TheAD/ Cask Strength is the annual releasethat puts every element ofArdnamurchan's character on fulldisplay — no dilution, no added color,no chill filtration between the caskand the glass. The 2025 edition, thethird annual release since 2022, drawsfrom spirit distilled in 2016 and 2017,making this the most mature iterationof the AD/ Cask Strength yet released. The blend is 87% peated spirit at30-35ppm — a medium-heavy peat levelthat puts this solidly in the range ofserious coastal peated whisky withoutreaching the medicinal extremes ofheavily peated Islay expressions —combined with 13% unpeated spirit toprovide the fruit and floral softnessthat keeps the peat honest.Ninety percent matured inex-bourbon barrels — the primaryvehicle for Ardnamurchan's tropicalfruit, vanilla, and coastal salinitycharacter — with 10% in ex-sherryOloroso and PX casksadding dark fruit depth and sweetness.
Master of Malt found"beach bonfire, custard, toffee apples, and black pepper — orange zest, earthypeat, vanilla, orchard fruit, oak char, and rich spice — smoke and pepperyspice linger among ripe tropicalfruit." The Whiskybase community'smost detailed reviewer called it "themost spirit-driven Ardnamurchan" he hadtasted — bright coastal character, prominent salty and mineral notes, peat, umami, soy sauce, oysters, moresalt, long and spicy — a whiskyshowcasing thedistillery's character "in the bestway." The balance between peated andunpeated spirit, bourbon fruit andsherry richness, and the fullcask-strength intensity: "a completesuccess — the balance is perfect."
Ardnamurchan Distillery is located in thevillage of Glenbeg on the ArdnamurchanPeninsula, Argyll and Bute — the mostwesterly point on the UK mainland, approximately 25 miles west of FortWilliam, accessible only by narrowsingle-track roads or ferry. Thedistillery was founded in 2014 byAdelphi Distillery Ltd — one ofScotland's most respected independentwhisky bottlers, known for sourcingexceptional single casks fromdistilleries across the country — andofficially opened by HRH The PrincessRoyal on July 25, 2014. The CarnochRiver provides the distillery's watersupply, running from the hills abovethrough the local terrain beforereaching the distillery below.
Theproduction philosophy is defined byfour commitments that distinguishArdnamurchan from virtually every othernew Scottish distillery:sustainability, traceability, authenticity, and the fulltransparency of natural production. Thedistillery runs entirely on renewableenergy — hydroelectric power generatedby the local burn and abiomass boiler fueled by wood fromsustainable local forest management —with zero dependence on fossil fuelsfor production. Spirit is never chillfiltered. No artificial coloring isadded. Every bottling provides fulltransparency of production details: thedistillation vintage, the casktypes and proportions, and the bottlingdate.
Production is split betweenpeated and unpeated spirit. The peatedspirit is produced at 30-35ppm phenol —a medium-heavy level that produces aspecifically coastal, maritime peatcharacter distinctly different from themore medicinal, heavily industrial peatof some Islay expressions. Annualcapacity is approximately 350,000litres of spirit per year.
The 2025AD/ Cask Strength draws from spiritdistilled in 2016 and 2017 — the oldestdistillate the AD/ Cask Strength serieshas yet used, reflecting thedistillery's natural maturationprogress as it moves through its seconddecade. The blend is 87% peated and 13%unpeated, matured 90% in ex-bourbonAmerican oak barrels and 10% inex-sherry Oloroso and PX casks. Bottledat 57.7% natural cask strength withoutdilution, added color, or chillfiltration.
Master of Malt (confirmed 2025 release):
"Beach bonfire, custard, toffeeapples, and black pepper. Orange zest, earthy peat, vanilla, orchard fruit, oak char, and rich spice. Smoke andpeppery spice linger among ripetropical fruit."
House of Malt (confirmed 2025 release):
"The high strength amplifies thecomplexity, with smoke and spiceinterwoven seamlessly through the sweetmalt core. Long, warming and intense, the finish leaves impressions ofsmouldering embers, dried fruit, cracked pepper and a subtle maritimesalinity. A lingering richness remains, inviting slow appreciation."
Whiskybase community (most detailed confirmed 2025 tasting note):
"Greatpowerful young Ardnamurchan, which only benefits from less caskinfluence. Bright coastal characterwith prominent salty and mineralnotes. Young age is noticeable, nonetheless this Ardnamurchan showcasesdistillery character in the best way.Malty and mineralic. Light smoke, earthiness, tobacco notes. Also somefarmy notes and sweetfruit — pear, melon. With time in theglass more farm, hay and brine. Lightsweetness, lemon juice, chili, seafood, sea salt, some notes ofsmoked fish. Lots of peat, umami, soy sauce, oysters, moresalt in the second sip. Longand spicy. This is probablythe most spirit-drivenArdnamurchan from more than 20 which Itasted so far."
Whiskybase community (second confirmed note):
"It's a complete success— the balance is perfectbetween the predominant bourbonwhich highlights a moremature distillate, and the peatand sherry which givecharacter, depth and fruit."
Whisky Art Blog (confirmed 2025 extended review):
"Smoky tones between thevegetal and balsamic on the nose — ablend of aromatic herbs androasted pine needles ongingerbread, marzipan, candiedpineapple, orange and fresh fruitsof apple and peach, meringues and salted caramel. Aslight note of nutmeg. In thebackground, pastry cream, whitechocolate, sweet licorice and chalk.Over time, the peat acquiresbriny nuances whilemaintaining a forest-like spirit.Ardnamurchan confirms to be a soliddistillery full of personality."
Passion for Whisky (confirmed house character):
"Peat smoke from theScottish West Coast. Sea salt andmoss with the fresher scentsof vanilla andfresh-squeezed citrus fruit. Maritimepeat, ripe apple and pear withwarm oak and black pepper.Salty influences of seaweededged by peat smoke."
Nose
Richamber. The nose opens with beachbonfire — the most immediatelyand the most specificallycoastal Highland peatcharacter arriving confidently at57.7% cask strength. Custard andtoffee apples add the mostwarming and the most specificallybourbon-cask-derived sweetness. Orangezest and earthy peat buildalongside the bonfire character.Vanilla and orchard fruit carrythe ex-bourbon basespirit's most generous fruitcontribution. Aromatic herbs, roastedpine needles, marzipan, andgingerbread add the most complexsecondary layer — thevegetal-balsamic smoke character thatthe Ardnamurchanpeninsula's specific terroirproduces. Candied pineapple andmango add tropical fruitdepth from the bourbon casks.Salted caramel, pastry cream, white chocolate, and sweetlicorice add gentle sweetnessin the background. Withtime in the glass, the peatacquires briny, mineralnuances — salty, slightlymedicinal, unmistakably WestHighland coastal.
Palate
Full bodied and oily —the most consistentlyconfirmed palate characteristicacross every Ardnamurchan AD/review. The peat arrives withgenuine coastal confidencerather than medicinalaggression. Smoke and spiceinterweave seamlessly through thesweet malt core at fullcask strength — the mostspecifically and the mostpowerfully integrated quality ofthe 57.7%presentation. Peach, apple, and pearcarry vivid fresh orchardfruit alongside the peat.Umami, soy sauce, and oysternotes add the mostspecifically and the most memorablycoastal and savory secondaryqualities that distinguishArdnamurchan's maritime peat frompurely medicinal orexclusively smoky expressions.Sea salt, chili, and aseafood character buildwith the second sip. Thesherry component's darkfruit and dried fruit depthadds richness withoutdominating.
Finish
Long, warming, and intense —smouldering embers, dried fruit, cracked pepper, and a subtle maritimesalinity carrying the closemost persistently. Thesmoke and peppery spicelinger among ripe tropicalfruit in a finish built for slow, unhurried appreciation. Oak char addsthe most structural and themost drying element at thevery close. A lingeringrichness remains — "long andspicy" as the most detailedWhiskybase reviewer confirmed.
