The gold bottle announces itself. The silver one makes a quieter statement, and it may be the more confident one. The Armand de Brignac Blanc de Blancs wears a polished, platinum-toned metallic finish with antique-silver pewter labels, an Ace of Spades in cool, minimal tones that reads as sleek, modern, and a little more rarefied than its louder siblings. It’s the bottle for the table that wants the ace without the glitter: black-tie dinners, rooftop evenings, a sushi counter, a gallery opening, a milestone that calls for something crisp, elegant, and unmistakable.
Like every Ace of Spades, it’s made by hand. Each bottle is coated in metal, finished and polished by hand, and fitted with its French pewter labels, so no two are exactly alike. And it’s rare: the house says its Blanc de Blancs makes up no more than 5% of its small annual production, which is part of why it’s often the one that connoisseurs, and the guests who notice, ask about first.
The wine is the cleanest expression in the range. It’s 100% Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, in the Grand Cru villages the house names as Cramant, Avize, and Oger, with the Montagne de Reims also cited by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, blended from three vintages and dosed at a brisk 8 g/L, with a dosage aged for a year in French oak that adds a touch of pastry and vanilla roundness. The brand describes “lightly buttered, baked pastry” on the nose followed by “pear, hazelnut and a hint of gingerbread,” and a palate of “exotic fruits such as guava, gooseberry and peach,” with “sweet spice notes of cinnamon and vanilla” and a fresh, mineral finish. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called it “full-bodied, terribly fresh and with good grip and tension,” “a persistent, salty-mineral and still a bit nervous Blanc de Blancs with good aging potential.” The Tasting Panel scored it 94: “Depth and length; lovely and showing great finesse and style.”
It’s the Ace of Spades for people who like their Champagne bright, dry-leaning, and precise. It photographs as beautifully as it pours: silver bottle, white tablecloth, a tower of oysters. It’s the one to bring when you want to be remembered for taste as well as for the gesture.
Armand de Brignac Blanc de Blancs is produced by the Cattier family in Champagne, France, led by Jean-Jacques and Alexandre Cattier. It is 100% Chardonnay, from Côte des Blancs Grand Cru villages including Cramant, Avize, and Oger, blended from three vintages, with an 8 g/L dosage from base wine aged one year in French oak. Each metal-clad silver bottle is finished and polished by hand, fitted with antique-silver French pewter labels, and presented in a gift box. 12.5% ABV, available in 750ml, 1.5L, and 3L.
The silver bottle is the rarest of the house’s cuvées, and critics reward its precision.
The Tasting Panel — 94 Points (Anthony Dias Blue, April 2016):
“Depth and length; lovely and showing great finesse and style.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate — 90 Points (June 2018):
“The NV Blanc de Blancs (tasted from the 0.75-liter bottle) is a pure Chardonnay sourced in the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims... Full-bodied, terribly fresh and with good grip and tension, this is a persistent, salty-mineral and still a bit nervous Blanc de Blancs with good aging potential.”
Wine Spectator (August 2017):
“A bright blanc de blancs, with a crisp and lacy mousse, this offers notes of crunchy pear, ground ginger and lemon pith.”
Christie’s World Encyclopedia of Champagne & Sparkling Wine (Tom Stevenson & Essi Avellan MW, 2014):
“Extraordinarily Exceptional +” rating.
Armand de Brignac (official tasting notes):
“The first aromas of lightly buttered, baked pastry are followed by notes of pear, hazelnut and a hint of gingerbread. On the palate, flavors of exotic fruits such as guava, gooseberry and peach are complemented by sweet spice notes of cinnamon and vanilla. Fresh, mineral finish.”
Nose
Pale gold. Lightly buttered baked pastry, ripe pear, roasted hazelnut, and a hint of gingerbread, with powdery white flowers and lime blossom.
Palate
Crisp and energetic, with a fine mousse, guava, gooseberry, and peach, cinnamon and vanilla, and a soft, chalky texture.
Finish
Fresh, mineral, and long, with salty-chalk precision.
