PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This is a rare thing: a Bordeaux with the Rothschild name that is also kosher. Barons Edmond & Benjamin de Rothschild Haut-Médoc comes from the Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild, the family’s wine company, which oversees a collection of estates across France, South Africa, Argentina, Spain, and New Zealand. It is a left-bank Bordeaux blend from the Haut-Médoc appellation: the 2019 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, aged 12 months in French oak “according to the tradition established by the great wines of Bordeaux.”
It is OU kosher, mevushal, and Kosher for Passover, which means it can be handled and poured by anyone at the table, a practical advantage for restaurants, hosts, and holiday meals. The producer describes the wine as having “attractive spicy notes, with rich fruit flavors,” and “a round and velvety tannic structure that’s characteristic of this great wine.” A kosher retailer describes it as drinking “like Bordeaux,” with “real fruit weight, real tannin, and a finish that earns its place on the Shabbos table,” with notes of “dark cassis, ripe plum and graphite” around “an undercurrent of cedar shavings and pipe tobacco,” and a “long and earthy” finish where “oak spice [fades] into dried herbs and a final whisper of dark chocolate.” For context, a later vintage (2022) was described with a nose of blueberry, plum, cassis, ginger, leather, and tobacco, and a palate that is “complex and full-bodied with lovely mouth-coating tannins.”
No professional critic scores are published for the 2019, but it’s a dependable, classic left-bank Bordeaux for customers who keep kosher or who host guests who do. It’s best at cellar temperature (about 16-18°C), with half an hour of decanting, and it pairs well with braised lamb, grilled beef, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté.
