Barrell Craft Spirits built its reputation on a simple, uncompromising idea: find genuinely exceptional casks, wherever they happen to be, and blend them without apology for how the numbers look on paper. Decade 2, launched July 22, 2026, is that philosophy pushed about as far as it can go — a blend of Canadian whiskies distilled every single year from 1995 through 2005, aged 20 to 30 years, then finished separately in Spanish brandy casks and Hungarian oak before being blended together. The result lands at a genuinely staggering 141.3 proof (70.65% ABV), officially certified hazmat-level — anything over 140 proof is legally banned from air travel by the FAA.
This is the second entry in Barrell's ongoing "Decade" concept within the company's Black Label Series, following an earlier Decade release that hit an even higher 142.7 proof. Founder Joe Beatrice explained the philosophy behind releases like this directly to Robb Report: "we have released small amounts of hazmat whiskey over the years and have noticed that there are some people who seek them out. We will only release a hazmat if we can create a high-quality blend that is flavor-driven. Also, please note that although they are hazmat, they are cask strength — this is just how they came out of the barrel." Robb Report's own tasting of the earlier Decade release found that "somehow despite the odds, this whiskey is still interesting, tasty, and drinkable," noting the secondary maturation "as is often the case with Barrell Craft Spirits releases" gives the whiskey "a palate that belies its incredibly strong proof."
Northwest Beer Guide's official coverage of Decade 2 specifically describes "layers of dried fruit, spiced chocolate, and a richer, more textured mouthfeel" — a genuinely serious, deeply matured whiskey built from two decades' worth of individually distilled vintage components, aged three decades at the oldest end, then carried through a genuinely unusual double finish spanning Spanish brandy tradition and Hungarian oak. This is Barrell Craft Spirits at its most ambitious: a whiskey built for collectors who specifically seek out extreme age and extreme proof, made by a company with a genuine track record of pulling both off without sacrificing drinkability.
Barrell Decade 2 is produced by Barrell Craft Spirits (BCS), founded in 2013 in Louisville, Kentucky, and described by the company as "the original independent blender of unique aged, cask strength whiskey." Rather than distilling its own spirit, BCS sources and blends exceptional casks from producers across the U.S. and beyond, exploring different distillation methods, barrel types, and aging environments, releasing its whiskies without chill filtration.
Decade 2 is the second release in the company's "Decade" concept, part of its Black Label Series. The whiskey blends Canadian whiskies distilled annually from 1995 through 2005, aged between 20 and 30 years, with each vintage's component finished separately in Spanish brandy casks and Hungarian oak barrels before being blended together into the final release. Bottled in Kentucky at 141.3 proof (70.65% ABV) — a genuine, natural cask-strength figure that qualifies as hazmat-level, meaning the whiskey cannot legally be carried aboard an aircraft. Barrell Craft Spirits' award-winning releases are sold in 49 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, the UK, South Korea, Ukraine, and Australia. Decade 2 launched July 22, 2026.
No independent critic reviews are confirmed specifically for Decade 2 at this time — a release just over a week old. For context on the "Decade" concept generally:
Robb Report (coverage of the original Decade release):
"Lengthy age statements and high proofs are two things that still hold a lot of meaning to some whiskey drinkers... Decade is a whiskey aged up to 30 years and bottled at the certified hazmat level of 142.7 proof... And yet, somehow despite the odds, this whiskey is still interesting, tasty, and drinkable."
Joe Beatrice, Founder, Barrell Craft Spirits:
"We have released small amounts of hazmat whiskey over the years and have noticed that there are some people who seek them out. We will only release a hazmat if we can create a high-quality blend that is flavor-driven. Also, please note that although they are hazmat, they are cask strength — this is just how they came out of the barrel."
Northwest Beer Guide (official coverage, Decade 2):
"Barrell Decade 2 offers layers of dried fruit, spiced chocolate and a richer, more textured mouthfeel."
Nose
Expect layered dried fruit and spiced chocolate, reflecting decades of Canadian whiskey maturation combined with the richness of Spanish brandy cask influence.
Palate
A richer, more textured mouthfeel carries dried fruit and spiced chocolate through the mid-palate, with Hungarian oak contributing structure and depth against the whiskey's genuinely extreme cask strength.
Finish
Long and warming, reflecting both the extended age of the underlying whiskey components and the double-finish maturation across two distinct European cask traditions.
