PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A Colheita ("harvest") designation is a genuinely meaningful distinction within Madeira production — rather than a blend of multiple vintages assembled for consistency, this is a single-harvest wine, entirely from the 1999 growing season, aged for a minimum of five years (and typically much longer) before release. Blandy's is one of Madeira's oldest and most respected houses, and Malmsey — made from the Malvasia grape — sits at the sweetest, richest end of the island's four classic noble varieties, alongside Sercial, Verdelho, and Bual.

Malmsey grapes are grown predominantly in São Jorge, on Madeira's northern coast, hand-picked and undergoing pellicular maceration before a natural-yeast fermentation, arrested at the desired sweetness level through fortification with grape neutral alcohol. The wine then ages in seasoned American oak casks using Madeira's traditional "Canteiro" system — a slow, natural aging method that moves barrels through the warmer upper floors of the wine lodge, deliberately harnessing heat and time to develop the wine's signature caramelized, oxidative character, a process genuinely unique to Madeira among the world's fortified wines.

The official product sheet for this exact wine describes "dry fruits (nuts), exotic woods, cakes, molasses and spices" on the nose, with the palate "sweet, soft and full-body," closing with "a long warm aftertaste with notes of honey cake." For genuine house-style context across Blandy's broader Malmsey range, the 10-Year-Old expression earned 90 Points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, describing "an introspective, marmalade, fig and burnt sugar-scented bouquet" and "a viscous entry that lacquers the mouth," with acidity "very well-judged, lending the finish a sense of poise and tension." Difford's Guide's tasting of the same range found "fig and raisin with Lapsang Souchong tea, vanilla fudge, nutmeg and cinnamon" on the nose, developing into "raisin, fig and blackened fruitcake with toffee, maple syrup, and Lapsang Souchong tea," alongside "delicate walnut and cinnamon spice." This is genuinely serious, patiently aged Madeira — a single vintage's fruit, given real decades of careful, deliberate development.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Blandy's Colheita Malmsey 1999 is a single-harvest, vintage-dated Madeira produced by Blandy's, one of the island's oldest and most respected wine houses. The wine is made entirely from Malvasia (Malmsey) grapes, grown predominantly in São Jorge, on Madeira's northern coast. Grapes are hand-picked, undergo pellicular maceration, and ferment naturally over 2 to 4 days in temperature-controlled tanks at 18-21°C, with fermentation arrested at the desired sweetness through fortification with grape neutral alcohol.

The wine ages in seasoned American oak casks using Madeira's traditional Canteiro system, in which barrels are moved through the warmer upper floors of the wine lodge to naturally develop the wine's characteristic oxidative, caramelized depth over an extended period. As a Colheita, the wine is entirely from the single 1999 harvest, rather than a multi-vintage blend.

Critics Reviews

Wine Spectator — 94 Points:
"The aromas and flavors of hazelnut, butterscotch, white chocolate and egg cream are lush and seductive. The elegant finish echoes with citrus and spice notes, along with plenty of dried tropical accents. Drink now through 2050."

Decanter — 92 Points

Blandy's (official product sheet, 1999 Colheita):
"Blandy's Madeira remains totally natural. Dry fruits (nuts), exotic woods, cakes, molasses and spices. On the mouth is sweet, soft and full-body, a long warm aftertaste with notes of honey cake."
