Böen is Joseph Wagner’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay label, and the name comes from the Scandinavian word for “the farm,” which reflects his belief that great wine is inseparable from the soil it comes from. Wagner is a fifth-generation winemaker, and Böen is built on the idea of making wines that tell a story of place “without pretense.” The core wines highlight three coastal regions: “the bright minerality of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, the rich opulence of the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County, and the spice-driven elegance of the Santa Maria Valley in Santa Barbara County.”
The Reserve Pinot Noir is where that last idea takes center stage. It’s a single-vineyard wine from the Haribach V. Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley of Santa Barbara County, a cool, windswept appellation that runs east to west toward the Pacific, known for Pinot Noir with darker fruit, spice, and a savory edge. The 2023 shows the style: “the glass fills with a ruby red color with hints of plum,” with “aromas of raspberry tart, blueberry, dried rosemary, and molasses.” The palate “cascades with layers of blackberry, strawberry, and boysenberry pie,” giving way “to flavors of cocoa, nutmeg, and brown sugar,” a “full-bodied wine, balanced by refreshing acidity on the long finish.”
The Tasting Panel reviewed it with enthusiasm: “The liquid glides into a depth of black-peppered boysenberry. Deep, dark, and mysterious, it lines the mouth with velvet tannins. Dynamic and rich, it exudes notes of pennyroyal — a hint of iron and mint — with a swash of black coffee. It satisfies with an overtly bold — and beautifully balanced — persona.”
This is a rich, plush, dark-fruited Pinot Noir for customers who like a bolder style than a Burgundy or an Oregon Pinot, and it’s a good match for rosemary lamb chops, smoked brisket burgers, grilled meats, and eggplant Parmesan. It’s a step up from the Böen Tri-County, which blends fruit from three counties, in a single-vineyard bottling from a distinctive site.
Böen 2023 Reserve Pinot Noir is produced by Böen, founded by fifth-generation winemaker Joseph Wagner (Copper Cane Wines & Provisions), from the Haribach V. Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara County, California. It is a single-vineyard, 100% Pinot Noir reserve. 750ml.
