PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Bouchaine is best known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but the estate's 100-acre Carneros property also grows a small amount of Syrah, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, and Riesling — a genuine showcase of just how versatile this cool, fog-and-wind-driven corner of Napa Valley can be. As the oldest continuously operating winery in Carneros, Bouchaine has spent decades understanding exactly how this maritime climate shapes fruit, and under winemaker and general manager Chris Kajani, who has led the estate since 2015, that understanding shows clearly in this Syrah — a variety that, in a cooler site like Carneros, tends to develop genuine savory, peppery complexity rather than the jammier, riper character Syrah often shows in warmer California appellations.

Wine Enthusiast's blind tasting found the wine showing "ample ripe, black-fruit flavors" backing up "smoky, meaty complexity" in a wine the reviewer called "full-bodied, generous and varietally true." The tasting continued: "dried plums, baked blackberries and a dash of black pepper bring it to life, while moderate tannins are absorbed by the full body." Bouchaine's own estate listing shows this exact vintage carrying a strong 95-point score. For genuine house-style context, Bouchaine's other Syrah bottlings from the Carneros region — including the Hyde Vineyard Syrah — have consistently earned similar praise, described elsewhere as "spicy, stemmy and earthy," "meaty and thickly layered," with "complex and structured" character and "a length of lush black fruit, lavender and licorice." This is genuinely serious, savory, cool-climate Syrah — a real departure from more typical warm-climate California expressions of the variety, and a compelling reason to look beyond Bouchaine's better-known Pinot Noir.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Bouchaine Vineyards is the oldest continuously operating winery in the Carneros AVA, located on the southern border of Napa Valley, adjacent to the Napa-Sonoma Marsh State Wildlife Area. The estate's 100-acre vineyard sits in a genuinely distinctive maritime climate, shaped by cooling fog and wind off San Pablo Bay, combined with ample midday sunshine — conditions that favor bright acidity and well-ripened fruit across Bouchaine's full varietal range, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and this Syrah.

The 2021 Estate Selection Syrah is 100% estate-grown, crafted under winemaker and general manager Chris Kajani, who has led Bouchaine since 2015 and prioritizes sustainable viticulture, including Napa Green certification and recognition as Napa Valley's first "Fish Friendly Farming" certified vineyard.

Critics Reviews

Lisa Perrotti-Brown for the The Wine Independent, 95 Points: “The 2021 Estate Syrah comes from vines planted in 2017. A tiny amount was made in 2019 and none in 2020, so this is the first vintage really made. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it gives up classic notes of blackberry pie, black cherry compote, and cracked black pepper with hints of bacon, crushed rocks, and licorice. The full-bodied palate delivers amazing intensity and tension, with plush, rounded tannins and peppery black fruit layers, finishing long and savory.”

Wine Enthusiast, 92 Points:
"Ample ripe, black-fruit flavors back up smoky, meaty complexity in this full-bodied, generous and varietally true wine. Dried plums, baked blackberries and a dash of black pepper bring it to life, while moderate tannins are absorbed by the full body."
