PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Bouchard Aîné & Fils has been making wine in Beaune since 1750 — nearly three centuries of Burgundian history that, since 1993, has belonged to the Boisset family, one of the most quality-obsessed and most internationally ambitious operations in all of Burgundy. Jean-Charles Boisset's broader portfolio has built a genuine reputation for punching well above its price point, and Bouchard Aîné specifically has carved out a distinctive niche within that group: textbook, reliably excellent examples of classic Burgundian appellations, made possible by generations of accumulated vineyard relationships and grower partnerships that let the house source exceptional fruit without the acquisition costs of owning every parcel outright.
2023 gave the house a genuinely rewarding vintage to work with. The Chablis growing season began with harsh spring frosts, but the vines recovered remarkably well and the grapes emerged in abundance; a stretch of concerning dryness through the summer was broken by well-timed showers in mid-August that triggered proper ripening, and harvest ran from September 1st through the 22nd under ideal vine conditions. The result, per the house's own broader 2023 Chablis assessment, was a very good harvest in both quality and quantity, with interesting balance across the appellation. Wine Access's own VP of Wine, Eduardo Dingler, tasted this exact bottling and declared it was "capturing lightning and the essence of Chablis."
Production follows the classic, fruit-preserving Chablis method: grapes and must undergo a long pneumatic pressing, followed by settling of the juice and alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures of 18 to 20°C, specifically designed to preserve maximum fruit character. Chablis itself — the most extensive village appellation in all of Burgundy at 3,712 hectares, spanning 17 delimited villages along the valley of the Serein — sits on limestone soil and subsoil dating back to the Kimmeridgian period, at altitudes between 180 and 260 meters, on gently inclined, southwest-facing slopes. The house's own broader 2023 Burgundy assessment describes white wines distinguished by elegance, complexity, and liveliness — subtle aromas of white fruit, citrus, and floral notes adding to their remarkable freshness. A textbook Chablis from a house that has spent nearly three centuries learning exactly how to make one.
Bouchard Aîné & Fils was founded in 1750 in Beaune, the historical heart of Burgundy, and has built its reputation over nearly three centuries of continuous winemaking. Since 1993, the house has been owned by the Boisset family — Jean-Charles Boisset's broader Burgundian négociant operation, whose portfolio has earned an extraordinary run of critical acclaim in recent vintages, including fourteen separate scores of 95 points or higher from James Suckling across the 2022 vintage alone. Bouchard Aîné specifically distinguishes itself within that portfolio through its ability to deliver reliably excellent, textbook examples of classic Burgundian appellations at genuinely reasonable prices — a value proposition built on generations of vineyard acquisition history and carefully cultivated relationships with growers across the region.
The Chablis appellation itself, from which this wine is sourced, takes its name from the village of Chablis and spans 3,712 hectares across 17 delimited villages in the valley of the Serein — making it the most extensive single village appellation anywhere in Burgundy. The vineyards sit on limestone soil and subsoil of Kimmeridgian geological origin, on slightly inclined, southwest-facing slopes between 180 and 260 meters above sea level, producing exclusively white Chardonnay wines. Grapes and must undergo a long pneumatic pressing upon arrival at the winery, followed by settling of the juice and alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures of 18 to 20°C — a process specifically designed to preserve maximum fruit character and freshness.
The 2023 growing season in the Chablis area began with harsh spring frosts, though the vines recovered well and grapes emerged in abundance. A concerning lack of water through the summer was relieved by showers on August 15th, which triggered the ripening process. Harvest ran from September 1st through September 22nd, with vine conditions described as ideal and only a few scorch marks visible following hot weather — resulting in a very good harvest in terms of both quality and quantity across all Chablis appellations, with notably interesting balance.
Nose
Pale golden-green, limpid and bright. Subtle aromas of white fruit, citrus, and floral notes lead the nose, with the appellation's characteristic flinty minerality emerging from the Kimmeridgian limestone soils.
Palate
Elegant, complex, and lively — the hallmark of Bouchard Aîné's 2023 white wines. Bright citrus and white fruit carry the primary flavor profile, supported by remarkable freshness and genuine liveliness on the palate.
Finish
Clean and mineral-driven, closing with lingering citrus and the flint-tinged character that defines classic Chablis. A finish built for immediate enjoyment, with the vintage's generous ripeness giving the wine real accessibility.
