Colección Visionaria is Brugal’s limited-edition sipping rum series, and each release asks a simple question: what if the cask itself carried a Dominican flavor? The series uses what Brugal calls the world’s first Aromatic Cask Toasting technique, developed by fifth-generation Maestra Ronera Jassil Villanueva Quintana, in which each cask is toasted with a hand-picked Dominican ingredient, infusing the wood with its aromas before the rum ever touches it. The first edition (2023) used cacao beans, the second used coffee, and this third and final edition uses coconut.
Coconut is a notoriously tricky flavor in rum. As Quintana puts it: “In rum, coconut tastes artificial. We wanted to highlight the tropical notes in a subtle and elevated way.” So instead of adding coconut to the finished spirit, Brugal places fresh Dominican coconut inside new French oak casks and toasts them, so the coconut character becomes part of the wood influence while the structure and complexity of premium Brugal rum stays intact. The result is bottled at 45% ABV (90 proof). Fewer than 35,000 bottles will be released worldwide, across just six batches, and each is hand-sealed and personally signed by Quintana, with its batch number etched on the label.
The brand’s tasting notes describe a bright amber gold rum with a nose of “creamy vanilla and burnt sugar reminiscent of caramel,” with “sweet lemon, hints of coconut water, toasted/smoky nuances, and a touch of wood spice.” The palate is “creamy and enveloping with bright citrus notes of orange peel,” “the sweetness of coconut water, vanilla, and caramel,” with “woody and smoky character,” and the finish brings “lingering echoes of spice, toasted oak, and a soft sweetness,” with hints of toffee and almond. Men’s Journal found “a slight tropical fruit note and some gentle woodspice on the nose,” continuing “through the palate, along with hints of vanilla, caramel, baking spices, and lemon, with a long and dry finish.” Brugal is known for a drier, more elegant style than many Caribbean rums, and this edition keeps that character. It’s a rum for slow sipping, neat or over a large cube, with a few minutes in the glass to let the coconut and vanilla open before the oak emerges, and for collectors who have followed the series from cacao to coffee to coconut.
Brugal Colección Visionaria Edición 03 Coconut is produced by Brugal & Co. in the Dominican Republic, created by fifth-generation Maestra Ronera Jassil Villanueva Quintana using Brugal’s Aromatic Cask Toasting technique: new French oak casks are toasted with fresh Dominican coconut before the rum is aged in them. It is the third and final release in the Colección Visionaria series, following cacao (Edición 01) and coffee (Edición 02). Bottled at 45% ABV / 90 proof, 750ml. Fewer than 35,000 bottles worldwide, in six batches, each hand-sealed and signed by Quintana, with its batch number on the label.
