Brugal Especial Extra Dry solves a genuine puzzle in the white rum category: how do you build real depth and complexity into a rum, then strip every trace of color back out, without losing what made that depth worthwhile in the first place? The answer is a genuinely uncommon technique — triple charcoal filtration, applied after two to five years of maturation in white American oak, former bourbon barrels, using the exact same wood policy and aging duration as Brugal's own aged Añejo expression. The result is crystal clear in the glass, but carries real oak-derived character most white rums simply don't have.
Brugal & Co. was founded in 1888 in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, by Andrés Brugal Montaner, a Spanish immigrant who brought distilling knowledge with him from Cuba. The company remains one of the three legendary "B's" of Dominican rum, now part of The Edrington Group. Production begins with 100% Dominican sugarcane molasses, double distilled using Brugal's own proprietary method specifically designed to strip away the heavier, sweeter alcohols that give many rums their characteristic sweetness — the goal here is dryness and cleanliness from the very first step.
Wine Enthusiast awarded 90 Points in August 2012, and the rum has separately earned 91 Points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge. The Liquor Barn's own tasting notes describe it as occupying "rare middle ground: complex enough to sip, clean enough to mix without overpowering a cocktail." Spirits Review's independent tasting found "pleasing sugar cane molasses, vanilla, and creamy notes with dry, leather, char and slight mineral notes" — genuinely unusual complexity for a white rum, "not some raw alcohol and off notes that you come to expect," developing on the palate into "toasted caramel, vanilla, minerals, molasses, persimmons, charcoal, oak, and leather." The Fat Rum Pirate's independent review found "crisp green apple and a little banana and pineapple" on the nose, "very sweet smelling and slightly floral," with a hint of the "tobacco-like notes" characteristic of Spanish-Caribbean rum style, though more subdued than competitors like Bacardi Superior, concluding: "when sipped neat the rum is surprisingly agreeable. It's not at all harsh." Hard To Find Whisky's tasting adds "rich flavors of coffee, cocoa, butter and vanilla" on the palate, closing "clean, smooth and beautifully enduring." This 12-count pack of individual 50ml bottles offers an easy, low-commitment way to discover a genuinely distinctive white rum built for both serious mixology and neat sipping.
Brugal & Co. was founded in 1888 in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, by Andrés Brugal Montaner, a Spanish immigrant who brought distilling knowledge from Cuba. The company remains a cornerstone of Dominican rum production and is now part of The Edrington Group.
Brugal Especial Extra Dry begins with 100% Dominican sugarcane molasses, double distilled using Brugal's proprietary method, designed to strip away heavier, sweeter alcohols and produce a naturally drier base spirit. The rum then matures for two to five years in white American oak casks, specifically former bourbon barrels — the same aging duration and wood policy used for Brugal's own aged Añejo expression. Following maturation, the rum undergoes triple charcoal filtration, a three-stage process that removes the color acquired during barrel aging while enhancing smoothness, resulting in a crystal-clear spirit that retains genuine oak-derived complexity without residual sweetness. Bottled at 40% ABV / 80 proof.

Spirits Review (extended independent review):
"First Impression: Pleasing sugar cane molasses, vanilla, and creamy notes with dry, leather, char and slight mineral notes and not some raw alcohol and off notes that you come to expect with white rums. Taste: Toasted caramel, vanilla, minerals, molasses, persimmons, charcoal, oak, and leather notes."
The Fat Rum Pirate (extended independent review):
"A quick nosing of the Especial reveals nice fruity notes like many white rums. Crisp Green Apple and a little banana and pineapple. Overall the rum is very sweet smelling and slightly floral. There is a little of the Spanish/Hispanic style 'tobacco' like notes. However these are more subdued than say Bacardi Superior. When sipped neat the rum is surprisingly agreeable. It's not at all harsh and is pretty pleasant."
Hard To Find Whisky (extended tasting note):
"It has all the smoothness of great vodka, but all the character of great rum. Palate: A smooth and refined taste that excites with rich flavors of coffee, cocoa, butter and vanilla. Aftertaste: Clean, smooth and beautifully enduring."
Brugal (official tasting notes):
"Color: Clear, clean and totally transparent color due to triple filtration. Nose: Very clean aroma, pleasant and subtle with hints of light vanilla, citrus, and coconut. Palate: Delicate, smooth, clean and refined flavor."
Nose
Crystal clear in the glass. Light vanilla, citrus, and coconut lead, with crisp green apple, banana, and pineapple, alongside subtle tobacco-like notes.
Palate
Delicate, smooth, and refined, with toasted caramel, vanilla, and molasses carrying the entry. Coffee, cocoa, butter, and mineral notes add genuine depth, alongside persimmon, charcoal, oak, and leather.
Finish
Clean, smooth, and beautifully enduring, closing dry with lingering oak character — genuinely complex for a white rum, without any residual sweetness.
