This 2014 Vintage of Port Charlotte Islay Barley delivers a compelling blend of bold peat smoke and refined orchard-fruit sweetness—an Islay malt that strikes balance between intensity and elegance. It’s confident enough for seasoned peat fans, yet polished enough to sip and savour.
Distilled on the Scottish island of Islay by Bruichladdich Distillery, the Port Charlotte “Islay Barley” series emphasizes terroir: this 2014 vintage uses 100% barley grown on Islay, with the malt peated to roughly 40 ppm. The spirit was matured in a mix of casks—approximately 84 % in first-fill bourbon barrels, 8 % in second-fill virgin oak and 8 % in second-fill Bordeaux wine casks. It is bottled at 50 % ABV with no added colouring and non-chill-filtered, offering a clean yet powerful expression.
Nose: Opens with malt-rich aromas—digestive biscuits, warm vanilla, honey and crème brûlée—before the peat embers drift in. As it breathes, stone-fruit notes (apricot, ripe melon) emerge alongside gentle citrus peel and light oak spice.
Palate: Full and assertive. The smoke is clean and aromatic, more ember-than-ash, layered with vanilla custard, toffee, ripe pear and a hint of dried apricot. Mid-palate introduces light rye-spice grain, chalky mineral and a fresh sea-air breeze.
Finish: Long, warming and cleansing. The peat gently lingers with salted-caramel sweetness and subtle oak char, then fades into bright citrus zest and a faint herbal note. The finish keeps the peat integrated rather than overwhelming.
