PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Giuseppe Campagnola is a genuinely historic name in Valpolicella — the family's presence in the local wine trade dates to the late 19th century, thanks to founder Carlo Campagnola, and after his untimely death, his widow, Caterina Zardini, led the estate through the difficult decades that followed, building the foundation that's carried the family through five generations to today. The estate has since grown to 80 hectares of vineyard, based in Marano di Valpolicella, right in the heart of Valpolicella Classica.
This base Valpolicella Classico is Campagnola's most immediate, accessible expression — a blend of Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, and Rondinella, sourced from selected hillside vineyards planted on calcareous soils at 200 to 350 meters elevation. As Campagnola's own copy describes it: "Valpolicella DOC Classico Campagnola embodies the soul of the territory, with its lively ruby color and fragrant aroma of fresh red fruits, enriched with delicate floral and spicy notes. In the mouth, the wine stands out for its liveliness and freshness, accompanied by a pleasant acidity."
We don't have an independently published critic score specific to the 2023 vintage of the base Valpolicella, so rather than borrow a score from a different tier of Campagnola's range, we'll let this particular wine speak for itself once it's open. Campagnola's own recommended serving temperature — slightly chilled, around 16-18°C — reflects the wine's genuine intent: fresh, lively, and versatile, "an authentic gastronomic companion capable of enhancing a wide range of Italian dishes," from meat or fish carpaccio to spaghetti carbonara or mushroom risotto, and equally at home as a simple aperitif alongside olives, cold cuts, and cheese. This is genuinely everyday-drinking Valpolicella from a family with more than a century of history in exactly this style of wine.
Giuseppe Campagnola is a historic family-run winery based in Marano di Valpolicella, at the heart of the Veneto's famed Amarone region, founded in 1907 (with the family's presence in the local wine trade dating even earlier, to Carlo Campagnola in the late 19th century). Now guided by five generations of the Campagnola family, the estate has grown from a small local cellar to one of the region's leading producers, farming 80 hectares of vineyard while maintaining a strong connection to its family roots.
The 2023 Valpolicella Classico DOC is a blend of Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, and Rondinella, hand-harvested from selected hillside vineyards in the Marano di Valpolicella valley, planted on calcareous soils at 200 to 350 meters elevation. In the cellar, Campagnola combines traditional technique with modern precision, using a mix of large Slavonian oak casks and, for its more serious bottlings, French barriques.
No independently confirmed critic score is available for the 2023 vintage of the base Valpolicella Classico at this time.
