PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Piedirosso is a genuinely ancient native grape of Campania, present in the region since time immemorial, second in local vineyard acreage only to Aglianico. Locally, it's known by the dialect name "Per' e Palummo" — "pigeon's foot" — a reference to the way the grape's stem colors a deep red at ripeness, resembling the reddish foot of a dove. The variety thrives especially in Campania's volcanic soils, and this bottling comes from exactly that terroir: Cantine Astroni's own vineyards on the outer slopes of the Astroni Crater, once the private hunting grounds of the Bourbon monarchy and today a State Nature Reserve managed by WWF Italy.

Colle Rotondella is sourced from the Camaldoli and Astroni areas, on rough, sandy, tuffaceous terrain at 230 to 300 meters elevation. Production follows a genuinely careful, traditional path: pre-fermentative maceration and alcoholic fermentation in steel for 15 days at controlled temperature, followed by four months of refinement on the fine lees in steel tanks — no oak, letting the volcanic terroir and native grape character speak clearly.

Falstaff awarded a genuine 91 Points for this exact 2021 vintage. Cantine Astroni's own official tasting notes describe "a clear and consistent wine, ruby red in color with violet hues," the nose "intense," "fine and complex," presenting "fruity notes (red fruits such as currants and plums), mineral and floral (violet) as well as toasted and smoky notes typical" of the appellation. Callmewine's extended tasting confirms "concentrated and elegant" character, "with notes of small red fruit and more mineral effluvia," a "slightly toasted background," the palate "lightly structured," "delicately tannic, refreshing and savory with a velvety texture." This is genuinely well-reviewed, authentically volcanic Southern Italian red — a real showcase of Campania's own indigenous winemaking tradition.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Cantine Astroni 2021 Colle Rotondella Piedirosso Campi Flegrei is produced by Cantine degli Astroni, located in the Campi Flegrei (Phlegrean Fields) region near Naples, Campania, Italy. The wine is made entirely from Piedirosso, a native Campanian grape variety, sourced from vineyards in the Camaldoli and Astroni areas, on the outer slopes of the Astroni Crater — a site with rough, sandy, tuffaceous soils at 230 to 300 meters elevation, once the private hunting grounds of the Bourbon monarchy and today a WWF-managed State Nature Reserve.

Production involves pre-fermentative maceration and alcoholic fermentation in steel tanks for 15 days at controlled temperature, followed by four months of refinement on the fine lees in steel, with no oak aging. Bottled at 12% ABV, 750ml.
