PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Vermell is Celler del Roure's own genuine rescue project — a red blend built around Mandó, an indigenous Valencian variety that had nearly disappeared entirely before the estate began championing it. The 2022 vintage marks a real, deliberate evolution in the wine's own composition: 50% Mandó, 30% Arcos, and 20% Garnacha Tintorera, a considerably different makeup than the 2020 vintage, which leaned far more heavily on Garnacha Tintorera. As Robert Parker's Wine Advocate describes it directly, this shift has pushed the wine "more into a small brother of the Safrà and Parotet" — Celler del Roure's own more serious, upper-tier bottlings — resulting in a wine that's "elegant, with finesse" and "much more elegant tannins," "more serious, less rustic" than previous vintages.
The wine comes from vineyards at genuine altitude — around 550 meters — and is made using a genuinely old-style approach: hand-harvested grapes, partly destemmed, undergoing a short three-to-five-day maceration, fermented with wild yeasts in both stainless steel vats and traditional stone lagars, before aging four months in clay tinaja. As the estate's own importer notes, "the wines are deceptively fresh, given the intense Mediterranean Climate," sharing "more in common with the wines of Southern Burgundy than their neighbors" — indigenous varietals that have naturally adapted to maintain real acidity even under Valencia's demanding sun. Bottled at a comparatively modest 12-13.5% ABV.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate scored the wine 92+ Points, finding it "a fruity expression on the primary aromas, you'd think you'd bitten into a bunch of ripe grapes," describing "this wine is simply delicious," "a perfect balance of juicy red fruit and garrigue aromas," "a fairly light, delicate red wine." K&L Wines' own staff review called it "an exceptional 'Southern' Spanish red that drinks like a cross between Beaujolais and a Southern Rhône red," noting "the Mandó tames and focuses the Garnacha Tintorera," which "brings a depth of fruit, more midpalate umph, and intrigue." Vinatis' tasting confirms "medium bodied palate with a fresh fruity feeling, medium acidity and medium tannins," "pale ruby with red hints," aromas "of ripe cherry, strawberry and vanilla." This is genuinely distinctive, terroir-driven Spanish red — a real champion of an almost-forgotten indigenous grape, made in a refreshingly honest, old-style tradition.
Celler del Roure 2022 Vermell Valencia is produced by Celler del Roure in Valencia, Spain, made from a blend of 50% Mandó, 30% Arcos, and 20% Garnacha Tintorera, sourced from vineyards at approximately 550 meters elevation. Mandó is an indigenous Valencian variety that had nearly gone extinct before Celler del Roure began championing it.
Grapes are hand-harvested, partly destemmed, and undergo a three-to-five-day maceration, fermented with wild yeasts in a combination of stainless steel vats and traditional stone lagars, then aged four months in clay tinaja. Bottled in April 2023, at 12-13.5% ABV.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate — 92+ Points (01/2024):
"The 2022 Vermell was produced with 50% Mandó, 30% Arcos and 20% Garnacha Tintorera, a very different blend from the 2020 I had tasted last time, with a lot less Garnacha Tintorera, turning more into a small brother of the Safrà and Parotet. It's elegant, with finesse, and has much more elegant tannins. It's more serious, less rustic. It was bottled in April 2023."
(Separately quoted: "A fruity expression on the primary aromas, you'd think you'd bitten into a bunch of ripe grapes.")

Juicy red fruit and garrigue lead, joined by ripe cherry and strawberry, alongside vanilla, spice, and earthy herb.

Fresh and stylish, closing savory and refined — genuinely more serious and polished than earlier vintages of this wine.
