PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Chalone 2023 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir captures the rugged elegance of one of California’s most historic vineyard sites. Grown on the remote limestone slopes of the Chalone AVA in Monterey County, this Pinot Noir combines vibrant red fruit, floral lift, and savory spice with the signature mineral backbone that has defined Chalone wines for decades. Polished yet expressive, the wine delivers a refined balance of fruit, structure, and mountain-grown character.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Chalone Vineyard is one of California’s pioneering estates, with vineyard plantings dating back to the early 20th century on a rugged mountain plateau in Monterey County. The estate sits at elevations approaching 1,800 feet, where strong coastal winds and cool nights create an ideal environment for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The distinctive terroir of the Chalone AVA is defined by limestone and granite soils, which contribute both mineral tension and structural backbone to the wines.
The 2023 Estate Pinot Noir is produced entirely from fruit grown on the Chalone estate. After fermentation, the wine is matured in French oak barrels to integrate texture and spice while preserving the vibrant fruit and mineral character typical of the vineyard.
According to the winery’s own tasting notes, the 2023 vintage expresses aromas of red berries, cherry, strawberry, vanilla, and toasted oak, with hints of leather and cinnamon, leading to a bright, layered palate and a lingering finish accented by violet, clove, and subtle minerality.
The result is a Pinot Noir that reflects both the cool Central Coast climate and the distinctive geology of this historic vineyard site.
Critics Reviews
The 2023 vintage is very new, and there are currently no widely published professional critic scores from major outlets such as Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, James Suckling, or Wine Advocate.
Previous vintages of the Estate Pinot Noir have received strong critical recognition—often scoring in the 93–94 point range from critics including James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast—highlighting the vineyard’s consistent quality and reputation for structured, mineral-driven Pinot Noir.
