PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Les Marconnets sits at the northern end of the Beaune appellation, next to Savigny-lès-Beaune, and its name is said to refer to the Germanic Marcomans tribe. Domaine Chanson’s parcel, the Clos des Marconnets, is 3.2 hectares of Pinot Noir facing south-east on clay and limestone. The climat has a reputation for “firm structure and racy acidity,” producing age-worthy wines of real backbone, which sets it apart from the softer, more perfumed Beaune Premier Crus.

At Chanson, the 2023 reds were made with a short cold pre-fermentation maceration and a shorter-than-usual vatting of 15 to 25 days, using 40 to 50% whole bunch for freshness and herbal lift, and chef de cave Lucy Auger said the wines showed “beautiful aromatic expression and remarkable color intensity.” The Clos des Marconnets ages 18 months. The vintage itself was a small one after an early-April frost, with a warm, humid summer and a harvest at Chanson that began on September 15 under bright sun. The domaine notes that the reds “have a good color” and “a beautiful fruit expression,” though volumes are low.

The domaine’s tasting notes describe a “ruby color” with “powerful aromas of ripe black berries (blackcurrant and blackberry) with hints of sweet spices and lovely oak notes,” and floral fragrances. The palate is “complex, tight with a fleshy texture” and “beautiful tannic structure,” finishing “long and spicy.” Inside Burgundy’s barrel tasting scored it 89-91. The domaine suggests pairing it with “beef cheek cooked at low temperature with mild spices.” This is a darker-fruited, more structured style of Beaune with real cellaring potential.
