Les Teurons is one of Beaune’s best-known Premier Cru vineyards, on the slope just above the town between Les Grèves and the Clos de la Mousse, and a plot of 3.8 hectares in the heart of Beaune is part of the Premier Cru holdings of Domaine Chanson. The vines face south-east on soil of clay, limestone, and sand, and the Pinot Noir is aged 19 months before bottling.
The 2023 vintage was not an easy year. An intense frost in early April hit the buds, volumes are low, and the season was a mix of warm and rainy spells. Harvest began at Chanson on September 15 under bright sun. Domaine-wide, Chanson’s reds kept the cold pre-fermentation maceration short and the total vatting to 15 to 25 days, a shorter time than usual, which chef de cave Lucy Auger says was “thanks to the wines’ beautiful aromatic expression and remarkable color intensity.” Chanson’s use of 40 to 50% whole bunch in 2023 earned praise from The World of Fine Wine for providing “freshness and herbal lift,” and for retaining “decent acidity and energy even in Beaune, despite the harvest heat.”
Wine Spectator scored the Les Teurons 91 Points, describing “a round, juicy style, offering cherry, rose hip, earth and underbrush flavors” that firms up as the fruit fades. Jancis Robinson scored it 16.5/20, finding it “smells so sweet, of strawberries,” with “a lovely sensation of circles within circles of fruit and energy,” “remarkably velvety” tannins (“although not at all thick”), a flavor of “something like a little coffee bean in cherry jelly,” and “exuberant, mint dusted, lively” character with “lots of black pepper on the finish.” Barrel assessments from Inside Burgundy and Burghound ran 90-92. The domaine’s own notes describe a “bright ruby colour” with “fragrances of violet mixed with intense aromas of ripe red berries (cherry and raspberry) mixed with liquorice,” a “subtle vanilla note,” a “tight and delicate texture,” “elegant tannins,” “very pure fruit,” and a “long and spicy finish.” It’s a juicy, spicy, immediately likeable Beaune Premier Cru with enough structure to age.
Chanson Père & Fils 2023 Beaune 1er Cru Les Teurons is produced by Domaine Chanson, a historic house in Beaune, Burgundy, France. The wine is 100% Pinot Noir from a 3.8-hectare plot in the center of Beaune, on clay, limestone, and sand, with a south-east exposure. The 2023 reds were made with a short cold pre-fermentation maceration and a total vatting time of 15 to 25 days, using 40 to 50% whole bunch, and the wine aged 19 months. Bottled at 13% ABV, 750ml.

“Smells so sweet, of strawberries. A lovely sensation of circles within circles of fruit and energy. The tannins are remarkably velvety (although not at all thick).
