PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Clos des Mouches is one of Beaune’s great vineyards, a sunny, south-east-facing slope at the southern end of the Beaune vineyards, on a spur pointing toward Pommard. The name means “the bees,” not “the flies,” an old local name for the hives that once worked this hillside. Chanson is one of its largest owners, with 4.5 hectares, of which about 2 to 2.5 hectares are planted with Pinot Noir on limestone subsoil covered with clay, and the rest to Chardonnay for the Blanc.
Domaine Chanson was founded in 1750 and is one of only six producers in Burgundy still operating from the 18th century. For the Clos des Mouches Rouge, the grapes are fermented, and the wine is aged on fine lees in French oak barrels, 25% new, ranging from one to six years old, and bottled according to the lunar calendar. The domaine describes the result as “a wine of place: intense, spicy, and complex, with the tight texture and long finish that define a benchmark red Beaune,” from south-east exposure and “lean, structured soils” that give “characteristic depth, tight texture, and spicy, fruit-driven character.” The 2023 is 100% Pinot Noir at 12.5% ABV.
The domaine’s tasting note: “Ruby. Intense aromas of crushed strawberry, raspberry, and cherry with a hint of spice. Complex and well-balanced on the palate, with a tight texture and a long, spicy finish.” James Suckling scored it 94 points (June 2025): “Delicate aromas of cherries, dried strawberries, cured meat, blood oranges and flowers. The palate is soft and focused, with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. There’s lovely tension and a mineral edge, with a great balance of fruity and savory flavors. Drink or hold.” A 93-point review cited by the producer (publication not shown) adds: “On the palate, the wine is textured and precise, revealing subtle notes of iodine and white pepper. This wine has much to reveal.” For house-style context, Wine Spectator scored the 2022 93 and recommended it from 2028 through 2042: “infused with ripe cherry, raspberry, sandalwood and mineral flavors, this delineated red exhibits tension and a line of firm tannins.” Wine-Searcher’s average across 99 critic reviews and vintages is 91 out of 100.
It’s a more savory and structured Beaune than the village-level wines, an excellent step up from the Chanson Teurons and Marconnets in your range. Give it a few years, or decant for an hour if you open it young, and pair it with duck, game birds, roast veal, and mushroom dishes.
Chanson Père & Fils 2023 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge is produced by Domaine Chanson in Beaune, Burgundy, France (founded 1750), from 100% Pinot Noir grown in the Clos des Mouches Premier Cru (the domaine holds 4.5 ha in total, about 2-2.5 ha of Pinot Noir), on limestone and clay with a south-east exposure. Aged on fine lees in French oak barrels (25% new, one to six years old) and bottled according to the lunar calendar. 12.5% ABV, 750ml.
