Château Carbonnieux 2021 Rouge Pessac-Léognan (Cru Classé de Graves) is a refined, structured Bordeaux that reflects the classic character of the Graves region. The cool 2021 vintage emphasizes freshness, precision, and aromatic complexity, delivering layers of blackberry, graphite, licorice, and subtle smoky earth. Elegant rather than massive, it shows polished tannins and vibrant acidity, making it a sophisticated red that will reward both patience in the cellar and thoughtful food pairings.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Château Carbonnieux is one of the historic estates of Pessac-Léognan in the Graves region of Bordeaux, located in Léognan just south of the city of Bordeaux. The property is classified Cru Classé de Graves for both red and white wines and is owned by the Perrin family.
The vineyards are planted on a mosaic of deep gravel and clay-gravel soils, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties. These soils promote excellent drainage and help produce wines with aromatic complexity, refined tannins, and distinctive minerality.
The 2021 blend is approximately:
58–60% Cabernet Sauvignon
28–30% Merlot
7% Cabernet Franc
5–7% Petit Verdot
Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. The wine then matures 15–18 months in French oak barrels, roughly 40% new, allowing structure and spice to integrate with the fruit core.
The result is a wine that emphasizes Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure while maintaining the elegance and freshness typical of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.
