Haut-Brion is the First Growth of Graves, the only one outside the Médoc in the 1855 classification, and it has a style all its own: smoky, earthy, mineral, and more perfumed than muscular. The 2021 vintage, a cooler year defined by freshness, precision, and aromatic clarity, suits that style well. The wine is a blend of 50.3% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11.7% Cabernet Franc, aged in 73% new French oak, and it reaches 13.8% ABV.
Critics rated it among the best wines of the vintage. Wine Enthusiast scored it 98, describing “the solid and serious structure of this wine,” “reflected in the wood aromas and spice from wood aging,” “dense, packed with tannins at the core,” with a concentration that “gives a dry character to the wine,” ready to drink from 2028. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate scored it 97, noting that “in comparison to its sibling La Mission Haut-Brion, the 2021 Château Haut-Brion is firmer and much more masculine.” Decanter and James Suckling each scored it 97, and Jeff Leve scored it 97 for “a strong floral accent that accompanies all the blackberries, currants, spice, tobacco, and smoky black cherries in the perfume.” Antonio Galloni scored it 95 at Vinous: “a very pure bouquet, quite complex with a mixture of blueberry and black cherry fruit, iris flower and violet, hints of sea spray in the background. This is more engaging than the 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion at the moment.” Jancis Robinson scored it 18/20: “Fragrant berry-fruit notes as the wine opens. Smooth and refined on attack, the mid palate full and generous swathing powerful but integrated tannins.” One merchant summarized the style as “graphite, cassis, cedar, and crushed herbs wrapped in ultra-fine tannins” with “no excess ripeness, no push for richness — just clarity, length, and quiet intensity that builds with time in the glass.”
It’s a young First Growth that benefits from cellaring: it should be ready around 2028 and hold for decades, a good wine for collectors who value precision and perfume over power.
