PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

ChâteauLynch-Bages has earned a nickname amongserious Bordeaux collectors: "the poorman's Mouton." The comparison is notcasual flattery — it speaks directly toa Fifth Growth estate that consistentlydelivers quality standing shoulder toshoulder with the First Growths, at afraction of the price, sitting on thesame gravelly Bages plateau near theentrance to Pauillac. The Lynch family,of Irish descent, owned the estate forthree-quarters of a century before theCazes family acquired it in 1934.Jean-Michel Cazes, grandson of thepurchasing Jean-Charles, spent decadesrefining the estate's supple, precisestructure, and his own son Jean-Charleshas continued that work since takingover management in 2006.

2010 isremembered, alongside 2009, as one ofthe truly great modern Bordeauxvintages — a growing season in which,as one critic memorably put it, "it wasvery difficult to make bad wine." AtLynch-Bages specifically, this vintageproduced what may be the estate'ssingle most acclaimed modern release, earning an extraordinary sweep of topscores: 98 Points from James Suckling,97 Points from Decanter, 97 Points fromRobert Parker's Wine Advocate, and 96Points apiece from Wine Enthusiast andWine Spectator. Deep inky purple incolor, still an infant even a fulldecade after the vintage, built on aconcentrated core of rich cassis fruitframed by firm, powdery tannins andlively acidity. One reviewer called itsimply "the best Lynch in a long, longtime," praising its beauty, finesse, and precision.

The 2010 offers roastedcedar, tobacco, and bay leaf notesopening onto intense currant, blackberry, and black cherry at thecore, with an iron-laced grip andpleasantly austere plum pit andlicorice snap on a tar-tinged finish —earning a Wine Spectator CellarSelection designation and therecommendation: "great range, characterand typicity. If you ever need toexplain Pauillac to someone, give themthis." Pixelated black fruit, crushedstone, and graphite soar from the glassin a wine described as "amazinglyfocused." Great swathes of blackberrysweep across the palate, followed byjuicy acidity, in a wine built to be adelight to drink for a decade and wellbeyond. This is Pauillac at its mosttextbook — and, from the vintage manyconsider Lynch-Bages' finest modernshowing, at its most rewarding.

Origins & Craftsmanship

ChâteauLynch-Bages sits on the gravelly Bagesplateau at the entrance to Pauillac, overlooking the Gironde estuary — a1855 Fifth Growth Classified estatewhose history traces to John Lynch, ayoung Irishman from Galway forced fromhis country in 1691. His descendantCount Jean-Baptiste Lynch, mayor ofBordeaux, inherited the estate in the18th century and handed management tohis brother Michel Lynch, mayor ofPauillac during the French Revolution —the family retained ownership forthree-quarters of a century, giving theestate its name. Jean-Charles Cazes, highly respected in the Médoc for hisviticultural experience, purchased theproperty in 1934, devoting decadesalongside his son André to itsdevelopment. Jean-Michel Cazesrestructured and modernized the estatebeginning in 1974, and in 2006 handedmanagement to his own son Jean-Charles,named for his great-grandfather.

Thevineyard stretches over roughly 100hectares in the Pauillac commune, planted on gravel, chalk, and sandsoils formed by alluvial deposits alongthe Gironde estuary — terrain widelyregarded as some of the finestavailable anywhere in the Médoc forgreat Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyarddivides into two main sections: a largeportion planted near the château itself on the Bages plateau, reaching a peak elevationof 20 meters, and a second sectionfurther north on the Monferan plateau, along with additional parcels near thevillage of Pauillac and vines borderingSt. Julien near Château Pichon Lalande. In total, the vineyard splits into fourmain blocks further subdivided into 140separate parcels. The 2010 blend wasapproximately 75% Cabernet Sauvignon,17% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2%Petit Verdot — a Cabernet-dominantexpression reflecting a vintage inwhich the variety reached exceptionalripeness and concentration across theentire Médoc.

Rich earthy loam, slate, and pencil lead underpin theconcentrated cassis, in a wine thatremains architectural, taut, and builtrather than immediately approachable.
