2020 marked the beginning of what Château Lynch-Bages itself calls "a new era" — the first vintage produced entirely at the estate's newly rebuilt winery. It arrived at the end of a genuinely unusual growing season: a mild, rain-heavy winter that replenished soil water reserves after a dry summer, an early budbreak roughly two weeks ahead of schedule, and flowering nearly fifteen days early as well, following a brief rainy spell in early May that gave way to ten days of hot, dry conditions perfect for even fruit set. From mid-June onward, the rain stopped entirely, and rising temperatures transformed the vintage's moisture profile into something that would ultimately produce fruit of real depth and concentration.
Echo de Lynch-Bages carries a story of its own. For more than thirty years, the estate's second wine was bottled under the name Château Haut-Bages Averous — a separate Pauillac property acquired by André Cazes. In 2008, the Cazes family renamed it Echo de Lynch-Bages, drawing on the Greek myth of the nymph Echo, condemned by Hera to never speak first but always to have the last word. It's an apt metaphor: Echo doesn't lead, but it carries forward the same DNA, the same graphite, ripe black fruit, and broad-shouldered Pauillac structure that has made the Grand Vin one of the most beloved wines in the entire appellation — a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, but widely regarded in the trade as performing at a Second Growth level.
James Suckling awarded 96 Points to the 2020: "intense graphite and violet character with lead pencil. It's full and firm with chewy and balanced tannins. Iodine coming through. So intense. Super second wine. Like the grand vin of Lynch from the 1980s." Decanter awarded 92 Points, describing it as "a serious Echo, one that has walls and depths to its tannins, and will take time to open up." A wine that, in the words of the CellarTracker community, "makes one eagerly anticipate the maturity of the 2020 Lynch-Bages Grand Vin" — and that, on its own, delivers genuine Pauillac seriousness at second-wine accessibility.
Château Lynch-Bages sits on the Bages plateau in Pauillac, Bordeaux — a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, owned and run by the Cazes family since Jean-Charles Cazes purchased the property in 1934. His grandson Jean-Michel Cazes is widely credited with the estate's modern renaissance, building Lynch-Bages into one of the most consistently admired and enjoyed wines in the entire Médoc — hedonistic in style, rich with blackcurrant fruit and skillfully handled oak, capable of being enjoyed young while also aging superbly over decades.
Echo de Lynch-Bages is drawn from a selection of the estate's youngest vines and specific plots, representing between 25% and 40% of the total harvest depending on the vintage — grown on Garonne gravel terroir, hand-picked and sorted directly in the vineyard. The 2020 blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, distinguishing it from the more Merlot-heavy blends of surrounding vintages. Crucially, 2020 marks the first vintage produced at Lynch-Bages' entirely rebuilt winery — a new facility whose enhanced precision allowed the estate to raise the entire 2020 Echo blend in once-used barrels rather than any new oak, a deliberate choice to let the fruit's own concentration and the new winery's technical capabilities speak without additional wood influence. Malolactic fermentation typically completes with roughly one-third in vat and two-thirds in barrel across recent vintages, with final blending decisions made in December following harvest.

Château Lynch-Bages official tasting notes:
"Echo de Lynch-Bages 2020 displays vibrant ruby purple in the glass with pure and lifted aromas of fresh redcurrant."
CellarTracker community:
"Deep ruby red in the glass. Medium(+) intensity of red cherry, black cherry, forest berries, bramble, blonde tobacco, cedar on the nose. On the palate red cherry, black cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, licorice, milk chocolate, cedar. Dry, high acidity, medium(+) chalky tannins, medium alcohol, medium(+) body, long finish. A beautiful second wine from Lynch-Bages, from a very good year."
CellarTracker community (second review):
"A generous bouquet of red and black fruit with floral, leather and leafy notes. A little rough around the edges, but not bad. It makes one eagerly anticipate the maturity of the 2020 Lynch-Bages Grand Vin, still several years in the future."
Nose
Vibrant ruby purple in the glass — the first vintage from the new winery producing a color of genuine depth and intensity. Pure and lifted aromas of fresh redcurrant open the nose, joined by intense graphite and violet character with lead pencil — the classic Pauillac mineral signature at its most concentrated. Red cherry, black cherry, forest berries, and bramble add layered fruit complexity, alongside blonde tobacco and cedar.
Palate
Full and firm, with chewy and balanced tannins carrying real structural seriousness for a second wine. Black fruits dominate — blackberry, blackcurrant, and ripe black cherry — layered with licorice, milk chocolate, and cedar. Iodine and lead pencil add the mineral intensity that distinguishes true Pauillac character. Dry, with high acidity and medium-plus chalky tannins providing genuine grip and structure.
Finish
Long and intense, with velvety tannins carrying the close alongside persistent notes of tobacco and cedar. Walls and depths of tannin suggest a wine that will take time to fully open — Decanter's own assessment — with a drink window extending through 2045.
