Chimney Rock has been one of the Stags Leap District's most consistent and quietly underrated estates since its founding in 1984 — forty years of Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Napa Valley's most distinctive and historically celebrated sub-appellations, now commemorated in a single milestone vintage that marks the estate's fortieth anniversary with everything it has learned. The 2023 is the anniversary expression that earns the occasion: 94 Points from James Suckling, a vintage widely celebrated across Napa for its exceptional growing conditions, and a blend architecture that distills the estate's philosophy — power and elegance in genuine balance, with a structure built to reward both immediate enjoyment and patient cellaring.
The Stags Leap District is Napa Valley's most specific and historically resonant sub-appellation. Bounded by dramatic palisade cliffs to the east that create the valley's signature afternoon shade, cooled by marine air channeled up from San Pablo Bay, and built on volcanic tuff and cobblestone alluvial soils that force vine roots deep for water and mineral complexity — the district produces Cabernet Sauvignon of a character that distinguished itself from the rest of Napa in 1976, when Stag's Leap Wine Cellars won the Judgment of Paris blind tasting and announced California's Cabernet Sauvignon to the world. Chimney Rock has been among the district's standard-bearers ever since.
James Suckling described the 2023 as "so well-balanced, elegant and drinkable," noting its "deep flavors of raspberries, black cherries, dark chocolate and baking spices" on a "velvety and approachable" frame with "great complexity and length." A wine that earns its anniversary designation fully — and that offers one of the finest Stags Leap District Cabernets available at its price point in this exceptional vintage.
Chimney Rock Winery was founded in 1984 by Sheldon "Hack" Wilson and his wife Stella — a South African-born couple who fell in love with the Stags Leap District's dramatic landscape and built their winery in the Cape Dutch architectural style that remains its most visible signature on the drive through the appellation. The estate was acquired by the Terlato family in 2004, under whose stewardship it has been elevated to its current position as one of the district's most respected and consistent producers.
The winery is led by Winemaker and General Manager Elizabeth Vianna — one of Napa Valley's most accomplished winemakers, whose tenure at Chimney Rock has been described by Wine Spectator as guiding the estate to "new heights." The 2023 vintage marks Vianna's continued refinement of the estate's house style: fruit-forward and immediately approachable without sacrificing the structural depth and cellaring potential that the Stags Leap District's exceptional terroir enables.
The 2023 40th Anniversary blend is composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec — a classic Bordeaux-inspired composition that uses the supporting varieties to add textural complexity, mid-palate flesh, and aromatic lift to the Cabernet Sauvignon's dark fruit core. The estate's diverse soil mosaic — volcanic tuff on the slopes, cobblestone alluvial deposits on the valley floor, with iron-rich red clay throughout — contributes the mineral complexity and structural depth that defines the Stags Leap District's most serious Cabernets. The 2023 growing season delivered near-ideal ripening conditions across the Napa Valley: a cool, even summer without significant heat spikes allowed slow, measured ripening that produced fruit of exceptional concentration, natural acidity, and fine-grained tannin structure — the same qualities that led critics to broadly celebrate 2023 as one of the finest recent Napa vintages for Cabernet Sauvignon.
James Suckling — 94 Points (2023) "So well-balanced, elegant and drinkable. This full-bodied red is moderately tannic, showing deep flavors of raspberries, black cherries, dark chocolate and baking spices. While velvety and approachable, it also delivers great complexity and length. Drink now or hold."
Wine Spectator's James Molesworth has covered Chimney Rock extensively, noting the estate's progression to new heights under Elizabeth Vianna's stewardship. Specific numeric scores for the 2023 vintage from Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate are not yet widely published at this time.
Nose Richly aromatic and immediately inviting — the Stags Leap District's signature combination of ripe dark fruit and refined mineral depth apparent from the first pour. Black currant and ripe black cherry lead with confidence, deepened by plum and a vibrant raspberry note that adds lift and energy to the darker fruit core. Caramel and cocoa powder drift in behind the fruit, followed by delicate sage and dried herbs — the district's characteristic savory undercurrent — alongside vanilla from the oak aging. A whisper of cedar, pipe tobacco, and violets adds aromatic complexity and elegance as the wine opens in the glass.
Palate Sumptuous, silky, and beautifully layered. The entry is all lush dark cherry fruit — vivid, precise, and immediately appealing — giving way to a sultry, silken mid-palate of black cherry compote, dark chocolate, raspberry, and baking spice. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc additions are evident in the textural generosity and mid-palate flesh that rounds the wine's frame without softening its essential structure. Bright, well-integrated acidity provides the energy and focus that makes each sip feel fresh and alive despite the wine's considerable richness. The tannins are moderately present — fine-grained and refined rather than grippy, providing structure and cellaring potential without imposing themselves on the drinking experience. The finish is long and smooth, with mocha, anise, and sandalwood lingering beyond the swallow.
Finish Long, smooth, and deeply satisfying. Dark chocolate, cedar spice, and ripe black fruit fade gradually together, with a final mineral note and a thread of dried herbs that persists well past the swallow. The finish is the 40th Anniversary's clearest statement of the estate's identity — polished and complete, with nothing unresolved at the close.

Best served at 62–65°F in a large Bordeaux bowl that allows the aromatic complexity to fully develop. Decanting 30–45 minutes will soften the tannins and open the dark fruit and chocolate notes considerably — an hour for those who prefer maximum aromatic expression. Outstanding alongside prime rib, grilled rack of lamb, dry-aged ribeye, braised short ribs, wild mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses. The 2023's balance of immediate approachability and genuine cellaring structure makes it a versatile purchase: equally rewarding opened tonight alongside a serious dinner or laid down for 8–12 years of further development. An exceptional anniversary gifting wine — the 40th milestone designation, the Stags Leap District provenance, and the 94-point recognition make it one of the most complete gift wine stories at its price point in the current Napa vintage.
