Chopin was one of the first vodkas to make the case that vodka should taste like what it’s made from. Instead of chasing neutrality, the family-owned distillery in Krzesk, in Poland’s eastern Podlasie region, makes three single-ingredient vodkas: potato (creamy and earthy), rye (spicy and crisp), and wheat, the lightest and most delicate of the three. Chopin Wheat was released in 2011, the third in the family, made from 100% Polish winter wheat grown within about 25 miles of the distillery and blended with water from the distillery’s own artesian well.
Chopin uses raw, hand-selected materials rather than buying bulk alcohol, and the distillery sits on a 17-acre estate whose buildings date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The wheat vodka is distilled four times in a copper column still, filtered five times, and bottled on site, with no flavoring or coloring. The brand is named for the composer Frédéric Chopin, and Dorda family ownership dates to 2003.
The wheat expression is soft and quietly sweet. The distillery’s notes describe a “floral bouquet” on the nose, a palate that is “light and delicate with a subtle sweetness and full creamy mouthfeel,” and a “medium” finish “with a lovely creaminess.” Falstaff scored it 90 Points, finding “a fine fruitiness” on the nose with “more spice tones” emerging with air, “finely tart on the palate with cocoa-like variations,” and “a slight peppery note” toward the end, with an overall “soft structure.” A Distiller reviewer noted “a moderately intense aroma of Wheat Thins” and “only slightly sweet on the tongue,” with a “dry, clean, and light” finish, “a really good example of a wheat vodka.” Another reviewer found it “smooth enough to enjoy chilled in a martini glass,” with a “floral lemon pepper” aroma, “creamy wheat flavor and warm mineral texture.”
It’s a graceful vodka for a martini, for sipping very cold, or for a light summer cocktail where you want the spirit to add softness rather than bite. The 1-liter bottle is the right size for a home bar.
Chopin Wheat Vodka is produced at the family-owned Chopin distillery (Podlaska Wytwórnia Wódek Polmos) in Krzesk, in the Podlasie region of eastern Poland. It is made from 100% Polish winter wheat grown within about 25 miles of the distillery, with water from the distillery’s own artesian well. It is quadruple distilled in a copper column still, filtered five times, and bottled on site, with no flavoring or coloring. Bottled at 40% ABV / 80 proof, 1000ml.
Falstaff — 90 Points (October 2024):
“The nose exudes a fine fruitiness, with a little air more spice tones emerge. Finely tart on the palate with cocoa-like variations, a slight peppery note rises towards the end, overall a soft structure.”
Distiller community:
“A moderately intense aroma of Wheat Thins fills your senses as you put your nose to the glass. As you taste, you can actually taste the wheat flavor which is a good thing... Only slightly sweet on the tongue, the finish is dry, clean, and light. Refreshing even. A really good example of a wheat vodka. To be had neat, in a dry martini, however you like.”
Best Tasting Spirits:
“The aroma is floral lemon pepper. It fades with creamy wheat flavor and warm mineral texture. The finish is semidry and peppery with charcoal taste. Chopin Wheat Vodka is certainly smooth enough to enjoy chilled in a martini glass.”
