PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Cincoro's origin story is a genuine basketball dream team — in July 2016, five rival NBA team owners sat down to dinner and discovered a shared passion for tequila: Michael Jordan of the Charlotte Hornets, Jeanie Buss of the LA Lakers, Wes Edens of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Wyc Grousbeck and Emilia Fazzalari of the Boston Celtics. None of them tasted a tequila that night that truly stood out, so they decided to build their own — the brand formally launched in September 2019, its name a portmanteau of "cinco" (five) and "oro" (gold), a direct nod to the five founders and their shared ambition to create the gold standard in tequila.

Cincoro Gold is the collection's most ambitious expression, blending all four of the house's award-winning tequilas — Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and a genuinely generous proportion of Extra Añejo, itself barrel-aged more than 40 months — into a single, proprietary blend that doesn't fit any official TTB category, but remains, importantly, 100% agave throughout, not the diluted "mixto" style that gives cheap gold tequilas their bad reputation. Every drop of Cincoro starts from the same foundation: 100% Blue Weber agave hand-selected from both the Highlands and Lowlands of Jalisco, harvested at a minimum of seven years old, cooked separately by region (the Lowland piñas specifically in small artisanal autoclaves) to preserve each terroir's distinct character before blending — Highland agave contributing sweetness, floral notes, and fruit, Lowland agave bringing earthiness, herbal character, and minerality. Production takes place at Destiladora del Valle de Tequila (NOM 1438), overseen by the generational tequila-making Maestri family.

Robb Report's own tasting described "an intense flavor experience, with notes of sweet honey, toasted oak, vanilla and dried fruits," calling the whole "Cincoro Gold experience... reminiscent of a finely aged scotch or cognac." Drinkhacker's independent review approached the release with genuine curiosity, noting its unusual, uncategorized status and confirming its genuine 100% agave credentials — "no Cuervo mixto," as the reviewer put it directly. The official tasting notes describe toasted oak, vanilla, cinnamon, roasted nuts, raisin, and spices on the nose, developing into sweet honey, vanilla, dried fruits, and spices on the palate, balanced by a genuinely buttery nuttiness, closing with cooked agave, cinnamon, chocolate, toasted almond, and a light ginger note. Even the bottle itself carries real pedigree — designed by Mark Smith, Nike's own Vice President of Innovation Special Projects. This is a genuinely ambitious, considerable investment in tequila, built by owners who've spent their careers chasing championships and clearly applied the same standard here.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Cincoro Tequila was founded in July 2016, when five rival NBA team owners — Emilia Fazzalari and Wyc Grousbeck of the Celtics, Jeanie Buss of the Lakers, Michael Jordan of the Hornets, and Wes Edens of the Bucks — met for dinner and bonded over a shared love of tequila, ultimately deciding to build their own brand rather than settle for what already existed on the market. Cincoro formally launched in September 2019, its name combining "cinco" (five) and "oro" (gold) in tribute to the five founders and their stated mission to create the gold standard in tequila.

Every Cincoro expression begins with 100% Blue Weber agave, hand-selected from both the Highlands and Lowlands of Jalisco, harvested at a minimum of seven years of maturity. Highland and Lowland agave are cooked and distilled separately to preserve each region's distinct character — the Lowland piñas specifically cooked in small artisanal autoclaves — before being blended together. Distillation takes place at Destiladora del Valle de Tequila, under NOM 1438, overseen by the generational tequila-making Maestri family. Cincoro Gold specifically combines all four of the brand's core expressions — unaged Blanco, plus aged Reposado, Añejo, and a generous proportion of Extra Añejo (barrel-aged more than 40 months) — into a single proprietary blend with no official TTB category designation, though it remains genuine 100% agave tequila throughout. The bottle and packaging were designed by Mark Smith, Nike's Vice President of Innovation Special Projects. Bottled at 40% ABV / 80 proof, released in 2022.

Critics Reviews

No numerical critic score is confirmed for this specific expression at this time.

Robb Report (extended coverage):
"The result is an intense flavor experience, with notes of sweet honey, toasted oak, vanilla and dried fruits. The Cincoro Gold experience is reminiscent of a finely aged scotch or cognac."

Drinkhacker (independent review):
"Michael Jordan's Cincoro Tequila brand continues pushing upmarket, its latest being a curious blend called Cincoro Gold. This luxe offering blends all four of Cincoro's other expressions — Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and 'a generous proportion of' 40-month old Extra Añejo — into a product that doesn't have any official categorization. 'Gold' of course has a dangerous connotation in the tequila world, but this is no Cuervo mixto, but rather 100% agave."

Cincoro (official tasting notes):
"Cincoro Gold is a blend of all four of our award-winning tequilas. The blend's character reflects the generous proportion of Cincoro Extra Añejo tequila, which is barrel-aged more than 40 months. The result is an extraordinary taste experience with notes of sweet honey, toasted oak, vanilla, and dried fruits. Cincoro Gold is exceptionally smooth and delicious."
