PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Clairin is a genuinely distinctive Haitian spirit — a raw, unrefined sugarcane juice distillate that undergoes the same basic process as rhum agricole, but without the refinement or standardization most rum drinkers expect. There are hundreds of clairin micro-distillers scattered across Haiti, many working from family secret recipes and methods perfected across generations, each producing a genuinely distinct spirit even when starting from the same basic ingredient. Clairin has real cultural depth in Haiti too — it's tied closely to Haitian Vodou, frequently offered to the spirits in ceremony, and some historians credit both clairin and Vodou practice with helping fuel the successful revolt against French colonial rule.
Clairin Milot comes from Distillerie Patrick St. Surin, located just south of Cap-Haïtien in northern Haiti — a genuinely small, artisanal operation whose spirit has remained relatively obscure even within clairin circles until recently. This bottling is imported by Selection Massale, distinct from the Velier-distributed clairins (Casimir, Sajous, Vaval, Le Rocher, Sonson) that first introduced the category to international drinkers.
Secret Rum Bar's tasting, sampling a bottle they understood came from exactly this distillery, found the nose showing "toast," "earthy" character, and "woodsmoke," describing the palate as showing "a slight burned taste, but sweet, like burned toffee," with "some milk," noting it a "good" clairin, "though a step down" from some Velier releases in that particular side-by-side tasting, closing with "a long tasty finish." A separate independent review at RumRatings, tasted at Cane and Table, described "incredible bread dough aroma" alongside "a fruity scent," picking out "dates and figs," with "anise and cayenne pepper" and "tomato flavor" that intensifies "with a few drops of water," the reviewer noting the finish comes "quick" and "loses any memory of burn," concluding it deserved a rating "way better than" what it had received elsewhere. Reception on clairin as a whole genuinely varies by palate — this is a raw, unpolished category by design, and Milot's own funky, woodsmoke-driven character is part of that honest appeal. This is genuinely authentic, small-batch Haitian spirit — real terroir and tradition in every glass, unfiltered and unapologetic.
Clairin Milot is produced by Distillerie Patrick St. Surin, located just south of Cap-Haïtien, in northern Haiti. Like all clairin, it is distilled entirely from fresh sugarcane juice, fermented naturally and distilled in a traditional pot still heated over an open flame — the same essential process behind rhum agricole, but carried out with genuinely minimal refinement or standardization, reflecting methods passed down through generations of small, independent Haitian producers. This bottling is imported by Selection Massale. Bottled at 43% ABV, 750ml, unaged and unfiltered, with no additives.
No formal numerical critic score is confirmed for this specific bottling at this time.
Secret Rum Bar (extended independent review, tasting a sample from this distillery):
"I understand it is produced at the Distillerie Patrick St. Surin just south of Cap-Haitien. Nose: Toast. Earthy. Woodsmoke. Good but a step down from the last two [Velier releases in the same tasting]. Mouth: A little less complex than the last two Velier rums. Slight burned taste, but sweet, like burned toffee. Some milk. A long tasty finish."
RumRatings community (extended independent review, tasted at Cane and Table):
"Pours clear. Incredible bread dough aroma but there's also a fruity scent. Dates and figs. This is hot at 55%. Anise and cayenne pepper. Tomato flavor. With a few drops of water the tomato really jumps out. This finishes quick and loses any memory of burn. Way better than the current rating."
Nose
Toast and earthy character lead, with woodsmoke, bread dough, and a fruity undertone of dates and fig.
Palate
A slight burned, toffee-like sweetness carries the entry, developing anise, cayenne pepper, and tomato, with genuine, honest raw-spirit intensity.
Finish
Quick and clean, closing without lingering burn — genuinely more approachable than its raw character on the nose might suggest.

Ti' Punch — the classic clairin serve: clairin, a touch of cane syrup, and a twist of lime peel, built directly in the glass. Genuinely the best way to let Milot's raw, funky character shine without covering it up.
Daiquiri — clairin's grassy, funky intensity stands in for a more conventional rhum agricole, giving the drink real backbone against lime and sugar.
Hurricane or Painkiller-style tiki builds — Milot's woodsmoke and tomato-like savory notes can add genuine depth to a fruit-forward tiki drink that might otherwise read as one-dimensional.
Neat, or with a single ice cube — many clairin drinkers prefer it this way specifically to track how the spirit opens up over time, since the flavor profile shifts meaningfully as it warms.
Bottle Size: All bottles are 750ML/700ML unless otherwise noted.
