Compass Box "Secrets of Smoke" Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml

Compass Box built Secrets of Smoke around a genuinely interesting premise: peated Scotch is almost always discussed purely in terms of intensity — how much smoke, how much punch — while the sweetness quietly hiding underneath that smoke rarely gets its own moment in the spotlight. As Compass Box's own copy puts it: "sometimes we blend to build and combine flavours, other times we use blending as a tool to unlock the secrets hiding within different parcels of whisky. In the world of peated Scotch malt whisky, intensity of smokiness tends to dominate the discussion." This release, crafted under Lead Whiskymaker James Saxon, is built specifically to flip that script.

The blend draws on distillate from Ardmore, Caol Ila, Laphroaig, and Bowmore, alongside two of Compass Box's own existing blended malt parcels — including their well-known Peat Monster — matured and finished across a genuinely wide array of cask types: American oak (some re-charred), Palo Cortado sherry-seasoned butts, refill red wine barrels, and Marsala barriques. Compass Box's own tasting notes explain exactly what each cask contributes: "wine casks release the unexpected sweetness at the core of peated whiskies, enhancing toffee apple qualities of malt whisky from the Caol Ila Distillery. You'll find bright cherry notes tempted out by refill red wine casks containing The Peat Monster, alongside blueberry flapjack flavours in whisky from the Laphroaig Distillery finished in Marsala barriques." Drinkhacker's independent review found "toasted honeycomb, wet campfire embers, and light pine tar" kicking things off, "with just enough grilled orchard fruit to pull a little away from the smoke," noting "hefty salinity" building "with time, along with herbal notes of cardamom." Robb Report's tasting called it "a lovely new blend," where "the sweetness that is promised definitely shines through, but it's soft instead of cloying," with "big notes of campfire, burning peat, and some iodine" leading the palate, layered underneath with "honey, cherry syrup, dark and milk chocolate, and toasted nuts," concluding it deserves a spot on "your list of go-to scotch whiskies... even if you don't think smoky whisky is your thing." Compass Box Secrets of Smoke is a limited-edition blended malt Scotch whisky created by Compass Box, the independent whisky house founded in 2000 by John Glaser, crafted under Lead Whiskymaker James Saxon. The blend combines distillate from Ardmore, Caol Ila, Laphroaig, and Bowmore, alongside two of Compass Box's own blended malt parcels, including their Peat Monster blend.

Component whiskies were aged and finished across a wide variety of cask types: American oak (some re-charred), Palo Cortado sherry-seasoned butts, refill red wine barrels, and Marsala barriques. The specific proportions run roughly a third each of Peat Monster (aged in red wine barrels) and Caol Ila single malt (aged in Palo Cortado sherry casks), about 22% Ardmore single malt (sherry casks), almost 6% Laphroaig single malt (Marsala barrels), a small proportion of Bowmore single malt (bourbon barrels), and a dash of an unnamed blended malt. Bottled non-chill filtered, in natural colour, at 52% ABV / 104 proof. Limited to 9,792 bottles, released September 2024.

"I'm not sure how many secrets this whisky is hiding, but there's certainly a complex array of smoky scents on the nose. Toasted honeycomb, wet campfire embers, and light pine tar kick things off, with just enough grilled orchard fruit to pull a little away from the smoke. Hefty salinity lies just underneath and builds with time, along with herbal notes of cardamom, roasted fruit."

"This is a lovely new blend. The sweetness that is promised definitely shines through, but it's soft instead of cloying. Smoke is, of course, the main player on the palate as you sip, with big notes of campfire, burning peat, and some iodine that lead the way. Layered just underneath are the sweeter elements, with notes of honey, cherry syrup, dark and milk chocolate, and toasted nuts popping up. Adding water is not really necessary at 104 proof, but a splash or two opens the whisky up a bit and reveals some citrus and caramel notes."
