PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Peated whiskey used to be commonplace in Ireland — before the 20th century, peat, or "turf" as it's often called locally, was simply what early Irish distillers had on hand to fuel their kilns. That tradition faded almost entirely as Ireland's whiskey style evolved away from smoke, and Connemara exists specifically to bring it back. It remains, to this day, the only widely available peated single malt Irish whiskey on the market — a genuinely rare position in a category almost entirely defined by its unpeated, triple-distilled character.

Produced at Cooley Distillery (now operating as Kilbeggan Distilling Company) in County Louth, on Ireland's east coast, the whiskey takes its name from the rugged Atlantic coastal region of Connemara in western Ireland, where peat sourced from the region's bogs is used to dry the malted barley — imparting a phenol level of roughly 14 to 15 PPM, notably lighter and gentler than the 30-40 PPM common in peated Scotch whisky. Rather than the triple distillation typical of most Irish whiskey, Connemara is double-distilled in small copper pot stills, then matured in ex-bourbon casks for four to five years, layering vanilla and caramel over the smoky foundation. As Celtic Whiskey Shop tells it, Connemara's existence was something of a happy accident: "when Cooley Distillery started up in the late 1980s, it had no plans to make a smoky whiskey, but at some stage peaty malt was bought and run through the stills with fantastic results."

Reception has been genuinely enthusiastic across dozens of independent reviewers, though a few candid, recurring critiques are worth sharing honestly. Master of Malt describes it as "well-smoked and peated, with heather freshness and floral notes with a honeyed sweetness and a little wood," noting the whiskey has "won over many fans of peated Scotch whiskies such as Laphroaig and Ardbeg" since its release in the late 1990s. Whisky Connosr's independent review called it "wonderfully light and enjoyable... a good introduction to the world of peated whiskies," while WhiskyRant compared it directly to Caol Ila for its salt-and-dry-peat character. Several reviewers note a specific, recurring limitation: bottled at the standard 40% ABV, some find the whiskey a touch thin or diluted relative to its considerable flavor ambitions — Whiskey Sidekick put it plainly: "very thin on the tongue, almost watery," while Dram1's review found "the flavours are good, but they're diluted and come off as watery at times." The Whisky Exchange's community offers a genuinely poetic counterpoint: "honey and lemon, green grapes, skin cream/lotion. Very fresh on the nose. The peat is in there, but it is all so perfumed, estery, and free of the associations that often appear with peat smoke that it could go unnoticed." This is genuinely distinctive whiskey — Ireland's own answer to Islay, gentler and sweeter, and a real conversation piece for anyone who assumes all Irish whiskey skips the smoke entirely.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Connemara Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey is produced at Cooley Distillery, founded in 1987 by John Teeling on the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth, Ireland, and now owned by Suntory Global Spirits, operating under the Kilbeggan Distilling Company name. Connemara takes its name from the rugged Atlantic coastal region of western Ireland, where peat has traditionally been harvested as fuel — the malted barley used in Connemara is dried over peat sourced specifically from the Connemara bogs, achieving a phenol level of approximately 14-15 PPM, notably lighter than the levels common in peated Scotch whisky.

Unlike the triple distillation typical of most Irish whiskey, Connemara is double-distilled, in small copper pot stills, then matured in ex-bourbon casks for four to five years, contributing vanilla and caramel character to the smoky foundation. Since its release in the late 1990s, Connemara has become the only widely available peated single malt Irish whiskey on the market and has earned more than 20 medals from major international spirits competitions since 2012. Bottled at 40% ABV / 80 proof.

Critics Reviews

No formal numerical critic score from a major spirits publication is confirmed for this product, though it has received extensive, largely positive independent coverage and more than 20 competition medals since 2012.

Master of Malt (extended tasting note):
"Arguably the most important peated Irish whiskey, Connemara was the first in the modern era of renaissance to remind folks that Irish whiskey can be smoky. Well-smoked and peated, heather freshness and floral notes with a honeyed sweetness and a little wood. Full and smooth with notes of malt and peat, honeyed smoke and barley sweetness."

Whisky Connosr (extended independent review):
"It wasn't heavy or too powerful, and was almost flowery and cheerful to the taste. It is very drinkable, easy to enjoy and would be a good introduction to the world of peated whiskies. So to summarise, it's a wonderfully light and enjoyable peated whiskey."

WhiskyRant (extended independent review):
"Nicely floral and a bit stingy. Oil, smoke, burnt rubber and meat. Taste: Salt with dry peat. Oak with gentle vanilla. Meaty with red fruity notes and oil. Brings Caol Ila in mind."

Whiskey Sidekick (extended independent review):
"Nose: Peat, grass, butterscotch, light smoke & buttered popcorn. Taste: Very thin on the tongue, almost watery. Earthy sweetness with light spice. Connemara fits in a unique space, being a lightly peated and soft whiskey at only 40%, but if what you are looking for is that peat & smokey hit, you're better off spending your Benjamins on a Highland or Islay Scotch."

Dram1 (extended independent review):
"Mild and sweeter than I would have expected from the nose. There's honey a plenty and, so much so that it almost overshadows the smoke. There are notes of malt and crunchy breakfast cereal as well. The smoke becomes more present as you let the dram spread through your mouth, but it's more a whisper of smoke that gently drifts by. Like going outside in the fall and smelling that someone nearby lit their fireplace."

Whiskey in My Wedding Ring (extended independent review):
"Connemara Peated Irish Whiskey has a deep smokiness, but it's balanced out with classic Irish whiskey herbal honey notes. Unlike peated Scotch whisky, which is often peated to 30-40 ppm, Connemara is peated around 14-15 ppm. The result is a peated single malt that isn't so overtaken by smoke that you can't taste the whiskey underneath."

The Whisky Exchange community:
"Honey and lemon, green grapes, skin cream/lotion. Very fresh on the nose. The peat is in there, but it is all so perfumed, estery, and free of the associations that often appear with peat smoke that it could go unnoticed."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Sweet barley and gentle wafts of peat smoke open, joined by hints of kippers and well-baked apple crumble, alongside heather, floral violet notes, and honeyed sweetness. A creosote note laced with brown sugar and a whisper of dark chocolate adds depth.

Palate
Lightly honey-sweet, with subdued, clean rather than sooty smoke, joined by peaty vegetal notes, sweet barley water, light spice, and vanilla oak. Some tastings find butterscotch, buttered popcorn, and mild molasses, softly honeyed and oily throughout.

Finish
Long and lingering, closing with oak and spice, lightly peaty and warming. Some independent reviewers find the finish shorter or thinner given the standard 40% ABV bottling strength, though the smoke and honey character consistently carries through.
