PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Mizunara oak is one of the most genuinely difficult and most prized woods in the entire whisky world. Native to Japan, the tree needs more than 200 years to mature before it can even be considered for cooperage, and it famously refuses to grow straight — a real, practical challenge for anyone trying to shape it into a cask. Despite the difficulty, distillers who work with it keep coming back, because the wood's unusually porous structure imparts a genuinely distinctive character no other oak can replicate: sandalwood, coconut, warm spice, and a faint incense-like quality that Japanese whisky drinkers have prized for decades. Dewar's has spent recent years building an entire cask series around exactly that wood, and this 18 Year Old is the latest, most age-forward expression yet — a limited edition release, bottled in 2025, that takes one of the house's most mature blends and gives it a final finishing pass through rare Mizunara casks.
Master Blender Stephanie J. Macleod — a five-time Master Blender of the Year — crafted this release specifically to explore what an already well-aged, 18-year blend does when introduced to Mizunara's unusual influence. Macleod has described the guiding philosophy behind Dewar's Mizunara work more broadly as "balance and smoothness," with the wood specifically enhancing "the signature Dewar's heathery floral honeyed notes while subtly imparting complex woody notes of sandalwood and cinnamon spice." That same house character carries through here: an indulgent balance of rich honeyed malt, subtle smoke, and exotic spice, built on the foundation of malt and grain whiskies all aged 18 years or more, drawn from Dewar's own single malt distilleries — Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie, Macduff, and Royal Brackla among them.
This is genuinely rare, limited-run whisky, part of an ongoing East-meets-West series that has already earned real acclaim elsewhere in the lineup — the Double Double 21 Year Mizunara sibling was ranked #7 on Whisky Advocate's Top 20 Most Exciting Whiskies of 2023, scoring 95 points. Bottled at 40% ABV, gluten-free, and best enjoyed neat or with a small splash of water to fully unlock the Mizunara oak's complexity, this 18 Year Old represents a genuinely mature, age-stated expansion of a project that's been steadily building Dewar's reputation for thoughtful, boundary-pushing cask finishing.
Dewar's was founded in 1846 by John Dewar, growing from a small wine and spirits merchant shop in Scotland into one of the largest Scotch whisky brands in the world, and has been part of Bacardi Limited since 1998. The company draws on single malt distillate from its own portfolio of distilleries — including Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie, Macduff (Glen Deveron), and Royal Brackla — blended according to Dewar's signature "double aging" philosophy, in which the finished blend is returned to vintage oak casks for a further marrying period before release.
This 18 Year Old Mizunara Oak Cask Finish Limited Edition, bottled in 2025, is a blended Scotch whisky combining malt and grain whiskies aged 18 years or more, finished in rare Mizunara oak casks under the direction of Master Blender Stephanie J. Macleod. Mizunara oak, sometimes called "water oak," requires more than 200 years to reach maturity and grows in a naturally irregular, non-straight pattern that makes coopering genuinely challenging — a difficulty distillers accept specifically for the wood's unusually porous structure, which imparts distinctive notes of sandalwood, coconut, spice, and Japanese incense. This release is part of Dewar's broader Mizunara cask series, which also includes the 8-Year-Old Japanese Smooth and the Double Double 21 Year Old Mizunara — the latter ranked #7 on Whisky Advocate's Top 20 Most Exciting Whiskies of 2023, with a score of 95. Bottled at 40% ABV, gluten-free, and available as a genuinely limited release.

Stephanie Macleod, Master Blender, Dewar's:
"The guiding principles in the creation of this whisky were balance and smoothness. This Mizunara finish enhances the signature Dewar's heathery floral honeyed notes while subtly imparting complex woody notes of sandalwood and cinnamon spice. It is an indulgent and pleasurable whisky with a rare breadth and depth of complex and subtle flavors."
Nose
Rich honeyed malt leads, characteristic of Dewar's signature heathery, floral house style, joined by subtle smoke and the Mizunara cask's distinctive sandalwood and cinnamon spice character.
Palate
An indulgent balance of exotic spice and honeyed sweetness, with the Mizunara oak's naturally porous structure contributing genuine depth and a rare breadth of complex, subtle flavors beyond what standard oak finishing typically achieves.
Finish
Smooth and lingering, closing with the wood's characteristic sandalwood and gentle incense-like quality — a finish specifically calibrated for balance rather than overt intensity, reflecting Macleod's stated philosophy for the entire Mizunara series.
