Diplomático Selección de Familia Rum 750ml

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Diplomático built Selección de Familia around a genuinely rare technical achievement: blending distillate from three completely different still types into a single rum. As UK brand ambassador Jon Lister explains it: "we have the Barbet, the French column still. We have a batch kettle, originally from Crown Royal from Canada — that gives us lovely rich flavours and spicy, creamy notes — and we have our Scottish [double retort] pot still, using that to give body and heart and soul to Diplomático." The final blend runs 90% pot still, 5% Barbet column still, and 5% batch kettle rum — a genuinely deliberate, considered ratio built to layer body, spice, and richness in a single glass.

Every component ages up to 12 years across American white oak, ex-bourbon barrels, and full sherry-seasoned casks — both Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso. What makes the sherry component genuinely distinctive: these are the exact same barrels previously used to finish Diplomático's own Ambassador and Single Vintage bottlings, but here, rather than a brief finishing period, the rum destined for Selección de Familia undergoes complete, full maturation in that wood. Diplomático is produced at a family-owned, field-to-bottle distillery in La Miel, Venezuela, with roots dating to 1959, founded by Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez and crafted under Maestro Ronero Nelson Fernández — a genuine family tradition, brought into a new era following Brown-Forman's 2022 acquisition of the brand.

Difford's Guide's independent tasting found the rum "clear, deep bronze amber with bright golden flecks," opening with "prunes, dates, figs, and sultanas with vanilla, rolling tobacco, blackened fruitcake, coconut macaroon and white pepper," developing into "rich and yet dry with lightly bitter wood tannins," delivering "baked overripe banana, dried fruit, coconut macaroon, tobacco leaf, chicory, and delicate Christmasy spice," concluding: "dryer than is typical of Diplomático, this is a highly recommended delicious rum. Find a quiet time to sip, contemplate and relax." Got Rum? Magazine's Paul Senft found it genuinely distinct from the brand's more familiar Reserva Exclusiva, describing it as "less sweet and more earthy," with "toffee" taking "the midline, while oak wood and spice notes of clove, cinnamon, and allspice form the foundation," closing with "a light oak smoky tobacco leaf astringency" before settling into "a long, balanced finish," recommending it as "an easy pairing" for cigar smokers. All at Sea's tasting found "the nose bursts with plum, cherry, and vanilla," with the palate carrying "these same notes with a hint of chocolate," concluding the rum "stands as a worthy rival" to Diplomático's own celebrated Distillery Collection No. 2 and offers "great value." This is genuinely serious, multi-still, multi-cask rum — real family craft behind a considerable amount of technical ambition.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Diplomático Selección de Familia is produced by Diplomático, a family-owned, field-to-bottle distillery based in La Miel, Venezuela, at the foot of the Andes Mountains, with roots dating to 1959, founded by Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez. The rum is crafted under Maestro Ronero Nelson Fernández, blending distillate from three distinct stills — 90% from a Scottish double-retort pot still, 5% from a Barbet French column still, and 5% from a Canadian-origin batch kettle still (originally sourced from Crown Royal).

Each component ages up to 12 years across American white oak, ex-bourbon barrels, and full-maturation ex-sherry casks — both Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso, the same barrel stock previously used to finish Diplomático's Ambassador and Single Vintage releases. In October 2022, Diplomático was acquired by Brown-Forman, though production remains tied to its original Venezuelan home. Bottled at 43% ABV / 86 proof, 750ml.

Critics Reviews

No formal numerical critic score from a major spirits publication is confirmed for this product at this time.

Difford's Guide (extended independent review, sampled 12/23/2020):
"Appearance: Clear, deep bronze amber with bright golden flecks. Aroma: Prunes, dates, figs, and sultanas with vanilla, rolling tobacco, blackened fruitcake, coconut macaroon and white pepper. Taste: Rich and yet dry with lightly bitter wood tannins. Baked overripe banana, dried fruit, coconut macaroon, tobacco leaf, chicory, and delicate Christmasy spice. Aftertaste: Rich dried fruit, vanilla, toasty oak, and black tea tannins with very delicate spice. Overall: Rich in character and yet dry with black tea-like tannins adding to the generous depth of flavour. Dryer than is typical of Diplomatico, this is a highly recommended delicious rum. Find a quiet time to sip, contemplate and relax."

Paul Senft, Got Rum? Magazine (December 2024):
"A toffee note takes the midline, while the oak wood and spice notes of clove, cinnamon, and allspice form the foundation. As the rum begins to fade, a light oak smoky tobacco leaf astringency briefly dominates the palate before the other flavors blend, creating a long, balanced finish. Selección de Familia, while having a similar pedigree to Reserva Exclusiva, has its own distinct flavor profile and, by comparison, was less sweet and more earthy. Selección de Familia is easy to sip, and for those who smoke cigars, an easy pairing recommendation."

All At Sea (extended independent review):
"The nose bursts with plum, cherry, and vanilla, promising a rum that aligns with my preferences. Swirling the rum on the front of the palate, I experience these same notes with a hint of chocolate. The Diplomático Selección de Familia stands as a worthy rival to the Distillery Collection No. 2 Barbet Rum. Priced at $49.99 per bottle, the Selección de Familia offers great value."

Diplomático (official tasting notes):
"Aromas of vanilla, toffee, red fruits and oak give a smooth taste to this complex and full-bodied rum. Sugarcane, honey and red fruits, followed by notes of vanilla and oak. Wood and plum combine with toffee notes for a well-rounded, long-lasting finish."
