Alter Ego is genuinely the whiskey that ties together the individual Exploratory Cask Series releases — El Cuerpo, La Mente, and a Cognac-finished third component — into one unified blend, and this High Proof edition bottles that flagship blend at a bolder, more assertive 114.6 proof, considerably higher than the standard 95.8-proof release. Doc Swinson's own copy describes the inspiration directly: "inspired by Scottish and Irish Whiskey blending techniques," the team blended two distinct bourbons — one high-rye, one higher-corn — then finished each portion separately in three distinctly different European casks, selected for their age and character.
The process is genuinely involved: the two base bourbons blend together first, then divide three ways into ex-Oloroso sherry butts, ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry butts, and ex-Cognac puncheons, finishing anywhere from three months to over sixteen months, layering in flavors of chocolate, honey, orange peel, fig, golden raisin, and crème brûlée. Once each cask is individually tasted and approved by Doc Swinson's master blender, everything is married together in genuine ex-Cognac Foeders before bottling — a technique the brand credits with imparting "dry nuttiness, subtle sweetness, and an extended finish" while still letting the underlying bourbon shine through.
Keg N Bottle's official tasting notes for this exact High Proof release describe "Cracker Jacks, caramel, nut brittle, dark cherries, and chocolate-covered caramels" on the nose, developing into "marzipan, bright cherry, spearmint, whipped cream, spicy cinnamon and nutmeg" on the palate. For genuine house-style context on the standard-proof sibling, Bourbon Culture's independent review found "fruit scents" arriving "first with notes of orange marmalade, cherry juice, raisins and dried apricots," directly comparing the release to Joseph Magnus's own Triple Cask Bourbon, noting both brands share a genuinely similar concept and MGP sourcing. Courtney Kristjana's review for The Whiskey Wash found the whiskey "nutty with a mixture of filberts, cashews, and almonds," with "sweetness" coming "from marzipan," concluding "if you like Toblerone or Almond Roca," this is "the right whiskey for you." Kenji Mizumori's separate Whiskey Wash review found the nose delivering "honey" first, "followed by hints of citrus and leather." Breaking Bourbon's tasting of the standard release called the multi-cask, multi-transfer process "fairly involved," concluding the results were "elegant and satisfying." This is genuinely bold, ambitious, cask-strength whiskey — the flagship blend behind Doc Swinson's entire Exploratory Cask program, bottled here at its most assertive strength.
Doc Swinson's Alter Ego High Proof Triple Cask Straight Bourbon Whiskey is sourced from MGP in Indiana, blended from two distinct mash bills — a high-rye 75% corn/21% rye/4% malted barley recipe, and 60% corn/36% rye/4% malted barley — aged approximately five years in American white oak. The blended bourbon then divides into three portions, finishing separately in ex-Oloroso sherry butts, ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry butts, and ex-Cognac puncheons, anywhere from three months to over sixteen months.
Each finished cask is individually tasted and selected by Doc Swinson's master blender before being married together in genuine ex-Cognac Foeders prior to bottling. Doc Swinson's itself began in 2017 through Distiller's Way, a company that helps launch bourbon brands for whiskey startups. This High Proof edition was released in limited quantities in Summer 2022, bottled at 57.3% ABV / 114.6 proof, 750ml.
Keg N Bottle (official tasting note, this exact 114.6 proof release):
"Nose: Cracker Jacks, caramel, nut brittle, dark cherries, and chocolate-covered caramels. Palate: Marzipan, bright cherry, spearmint, whipped cream, spicy cinnamon and nutmeg."
For house-style context, the standard 95.8-proof release has received:
Courtney Kristjana, The Whiskey Wash (extended independent review, Batch 21-006):
"The bourbon is nutty with a mixture of filberts, cashews, and almonds. Nutmeg is subdued. The sweetness comes from marzipan. The ABV hovers and feels ethereal in the glass. Cocoa and oak find their way to nostrils near the end. If you like Toblerone or Almond Roca, then Doc Swinson's Alter Ego Triple Cask Bourbon is the right whiskey for you."
Kenji Mizumori, The Whiskey Wash (extended independent review):
"Orange with a slight yellow tint. In the glass, legs were long, though slow to make their way along the sides. Rich, with a touch of heat. Honey was the first aroma to be noted, followed by hints of citrus and leather."
Bourbon Culture (extended independent review):
"Nose: Fruit scents arrive first with notes of orange marmalade, cherry juice, raisins and dried apricots."
Breaking Bourbon (extended independent review, Release 21-009):
"Starting with a two bourbon blend and then finishing in multiple barrels marries flavors to elegant and satisfying results."
Doc Swinson's / Distiller (official tasting notes):
"Dry orange peel, leather, stewed apricot, pear covered in cinnamon, caramel, oak aged vanilla, and walnuts."
Nose
Cracker Jacks and caramel lead, joined by nut brittle, dark cherry, and chocolate-covered caramel, alongside orange marmalade, dried apricot, and honey.
Palate
Marzipan and bright cherry carry the entry, developing spearmint, whipped cream, spicy cinnamon, and nutmeg, alongside dry orange peel, stewed apricot, and oak-aged vanilla.
Finish
Extended and nutty, closing with lingering walnut, leather, and cocoa — genuinely bold and cask-strength intense.
