La Mente — Spanish for "the mind" — holds genuine sentimental significance within Doc Swinson's own story: it was the very first barrel-finished expression the brand ever developed. As the team puts it directly: "oloroso sherry is the first barrel finish expression we started with at Doc Swinson's. That's right, the one that started it all!" Part two of three in the Exploratory Cask Series, La Mente is one of the individual components behind Doc Swinson's acclaimed Alter Ego Triple Cask Bourbon — alongside El Cuerpo ("the body") and Spirit — each one finished in a different exotic cask type, then normally blended together. This release lets whiskey drinkers taste the Oloroso-finished piece entirely on its own, bottled at full blender's strength.
The bourbon begins as Doc Swinson's own "36/21" blender's cut — a blend of two high-rye bourbon mash bills, aged nearly six years in new American white oak char #4 barrels, before receiving an extended finishing period in genuine Oloroso sherry butts. As the team describes it: "we find that oloroso sherry adds significant complexity and mouth feel while layering in notes of roasted nuts, spices and orange peel."
Tastings.com's independent review found "inviting aromas and flavors of maple syrup on buckwheat pancakes, buttery caramelized chestnuts, very dark chocolate, and vanilla candle," with "a supple, vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium-full body," describing "a warming, interesting, long finish" revealing "notes of spicy corn pudding, chocolate drizzled dried fruit, and sweet and peppery spices," concluding it's "a big and brooding Bourbon with gravitas and grace" and recommending drinkers "give this some water, time, and space." Hi Proof's own tasting notes describe the sherry influence adding "remarkable depth and brightness, bringing layers of orange peel, dried apricot, roasted nuts, almond, honey, caramel, and baking spices," calling it "rich, full-bodied" with "pronounced fruit, nutty sweetness, citrus, and warm spice." LoveScotch's tasting confirms "a rich, velvety texture with notes of dried fruit, caramel, and toasted oak," the nose revealing "a bouquet of dark fruits, vanilla, and warm spices." This is genuinely rich, complex whiskey — the very expression that launched Doc Swinson's entire cask-finishing program, presented here entirely on its own.
Doc Swinson's Exploratory Cask Series La Mente Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a 5-year bourbon sourced from MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, blended from two high-rye bourbon mash bills — Doc Swinson's own "36/21" blender's cut. The whiskey ages nearly six years in new American white oak char #4 barrels before undergoing an extended finishing period in genuine Oloroso sherry butts.
La Mente ("The Mind") is one of three limited bourbons — alongside El Cuerpo ("The Body") and Spirit — that together make up Doc Swinson's Alter Ego Triple Cask Bourbon. This Exploratory Cask Series release presents La Mente as a genuine standalone, single-finish expression, hand-blended by Doc Swinson's own blender at full blender's strength. Specific batches have varied around 113.8 proof (56.9% ABV).
Tastings.com (extended independent review):
"Amber color. Inviting aromas and flavors of maple syrup on buckwheat pancakes, buttery caramelized chestnuts, very dark chocolate, and vanilla candle with a supple, vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium-full body and a warming, interesting, long finish revealing notes of spicy corn pudding, chocolate drizzled dried fruit, and sweet and peppery spices. A big and brooding Bourbon with gravitas and grace; give this some water, time, and space."
Doc Swinson's (official brand statement):
"This one is pretty special, oloroso sherry is the first barrel finish expression we started with at Doc Swinson's. That's right, the one that started it all! We found this to be one of our favorite finishes, as it plays exceptionally well with our base whiskey, Doc thirty-six twenty-one blenders cut bourbon."
