PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Tres Amigos is a genuinely playful, three-part experiment — rye whiskey that's already spent time in Doc Swinson's own ex-rum cask solera system, then given a further finishing stage in select Añejo tequila casks. The name says it all: three distinct spirits, three different cask journeys, all converging in one bottle. The whiskey begins as a blend of two five-year rye mash bills — 95% rye/5% malted barley, and 45% corn/51% rye/4% malted barley — which first spends time in Doc Swinson's established ex-rum cask solera (the same system behind the brand's acclaimed Alter Ego Solera Rye), before the chief blender, Jesse, decided to push it one step further into Añejo tequila wood.

That tequila detail carries a genuinely thoughtful story behind it: Jesse personally traveled to Jalisco to taste through multiple tequila houses before selecting the casks used here, though for non-disclosure reasons the specific producers aren't listed on the label. As one reviewer put it after hearing that story directly from Jesse: "I trust him from a consumer standpoint to have not just chosen the tequila most readily-available but rather" one chosen with real care.

Whiskey in My Wedding Ring's independent review found this "a tropical trip in a bottle," describing the sensation of "entering the tropical forest section of a zoo or amusement park, smelling the warm air with grassy foliage, hints of Caribbean sea spray and local fruit being cut on the side of the street," concluding "you know a whiskey or any drink is done well when it immediately takes you to a sense memory." The reviewer found "spicy rye" hitting "up front, more on the tongue itself than on the tip," with "the rum and añejo both immediately present, laying heavily on the whole tongue," and praised Doc Swinson's transparency about sourcing from MGP, noting the brand's "real art is blending and finishing." The official tasting notes describe "raisins, golden plums, pineapple skins and oak wood" on the nose, developing into "canned pears in syrup, butterscotch, golden raisins and flakey pie crust" on the palate, with a finish that's "sweet, almost bourbon-y," where "rye spice meets Turkish Delight." One retailer's own copy sums it up as "a true piñata of goodness" — "rich and spicy whiskey, supported by peppery and sweet agave and funky fruity rum." This is genuinely one of the more adventurous, multi-spirit whiskeys on the market — a real showcase of Doc Swinson's willingness to layer cask after cask in pursuit of something entirely new.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Doc Swinson's Exploratory Cask Series Tres Amigos Straight Rye Whiskey blends two five-year rye mash bills — 95% rye/5% malted barley, and 45% corn/51% rye/4% malted barley — aged in American white oak char #4 barrels. The rye then finishes in Doc Swinson's own ex-rum cask solera system (established 2020, the same solera behind the brand's Alter Ego Solera Rye) for approximately one to three years, before a final finishing stage in select ex-Añejo tequila casks, ranging from roughly seven months to a year depending on the specific batch. Batches have varied around 52.9% ABV (105.8 proof) to 114 proof depending on release. Bottled at 750ml.

Critics Reviews

Whiskey in My Wedding Ring (extended independent review):
"This 'Tres Amigos' bottling is a tropical trip in a bottle. I immediately felt like I was entering the tropical forest section of a zoo or amusement park, smelling the warm air with grassy foliage, hints of Caribbean sea spray and local fruit being cut on the side of the street. You know a whiskey or any drink is done well when it immediately takes you to a sense memory. Palate: Spicy rye hits up front, more on the tongue itself than on the tip. The rum and añejo are both immediately present, laying heavily on the whole tongue. This is where Doc Swinson's shines brightest for me. They tell you straight away that their whiskey is sourced from MGP, and their real art is blending and finishing. Jesse took time to go down to Jalisco and try multiple tequilas before choosing to finish his rye in some."

Doc Swinson's (official tasting notes, house style across batches):
"Nose: Raisins, golden plums, pineapple skins and oak wood — or, in later batches, pear cobbler, agave syrup, pineapple skins, citrus, peppercorns. Palate: Canned pears in syrup, butterscotch, golden raisins and flakey pie crust. Finish: Sweet, almost bourbon-y finish. Rye spice meets Turkish Delight."

Main Street Liquor (extended tasting note):
"The result is a plethora of flavors starring rich and spicy whiskey, supported by peppery and sweet agave and funky fruity rum; a true piñata of goodness."
