PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

White port is a genuinely rare cask type to find anywhere in American whiskey, and Doc Swinson's Master Blender Jesse Parker had wanted to work with it for years before this release finally happened. "White port was a bucket list item," he explained. "White port finish makes a summery kind of profile for the whiskey, which is why I released this in spring and I named it Summer Retreat. The first time I had really ever tried white port it reminded me of drinking a nice spritz in the heat. The white port in Summer Retreat makes the whiskey vivacious, bright, and brings to life the spiciness of the rye whiskey."

What makes this cask journey genuinely unusual is its double life: the barrels are French oak, first used to age Bordeaux wine, then later filled with white port before ever making their way to Doc Swinson's warehouse to finish this rye. That's a real point of pride for the brand — as Parker put it: "in America these barrels are not commonly imported, therefore less blending houses are experimenting and creating whiskey with white port. For us at Doc Swinson's, when we get to play with and introduce something new to the American whiskey market we get really excited. We love showcasing new flavor elements that you probably haven't experienced. It's the Doc Swinson way that makes people tell their friends, 'you have to taste this!'"

The whiskey itself blends two distinct mash bills — a 95% rye, 5% malted barley recipe alongside a 45% corn, 51% rye, 4% malted barley recipe — aged a full seven years in American white oak (char #4), before spending 3 to 5 months finishing in those ex-Bordeaux, ex-white port French oak casks, and bottled entirely at cask strength. The official tasting notes describe "toasted almonds, orange marmalade, and bright white grape," with the brand's own copy adding real depth beyond the initial fruit: "a port style rarely found in North America, it's similar to a Vinho Verde with fresh floral notes and a nice acidity that complements the robust sweet and spicy profiles of the rye whiskey... delight in the subtle acidity enhancing the whiskey's freshness." Parker himself notes there's genuine complexity beneath the bright citrus: "because of the French oak barrels you will also taste tobacco, leather and chocolate characteristics in Summer Retreat rye whiskey." Doc Swinson's has built a genuine reputation around this kind of adventurous, small-batch experimentation, described elsewhere as "among the most creative and innovative American whiskey bottlers" — this is a real showcase of exactly why.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Doc Swinson's Exploratory Cask "Summer Retreat" is a limited, small-batch rye whiskey blending two distinct mash bills: a 95% rye, 5% malted barley recipe, alongside a 45% corn, 51% rye, 4% malted barley recipe. The whiskey ages a full 7 years in American white oak, char #4, 200-liter casks, before undergoing a 3-to-5-month finish in French oak barrels — casks with a genuinely rare double history, first used to age Bordeaux wine, then later filled with white port before arriving at Doc Swinson's own warehouse.

The release was developed by Doc Swinson's Master Blender, Jesse Parker, as a long-sought exploration of white port cask finishing — a cask type genuinely uncommon in American whiskey production, since white port barrels aren't commonly imported into the United States. The whiskey is bottled at cask strength, 52.6% ABV / 105.2 proof.
