Wine Advocate awarded 92 Points to this wine — the highest score the publication has awarded to the Classique in recent memory. Jeff Leve of The Wine Cellar Insider praised "peppery raspberries, flowers, cherries, and licorice" on the nose, with "soft, refined, fresh, and fruity raspberries, strawberries, and sweet, peppery, juicy kirsch" on a palate he described as going to be "delicious on release" — adding "Drink from 2025–2035." Nicolas Greinacher described it as "bursting with orange blossom, garrigue, red cherry, strawberry and licorice, striking the perfect balance between opulence and freshness." Matt Walls called it "impressively expressive, with melted down berry fruits infused with herbs — really fruity and ripe, but all well controlled and focused, with fine tannins. A lively and vibrant Tradition cuvée that should be great value for money."
The 2022 vintage itself is the underlying story. Across the Southern Rhône, 2022 produced wines of unusual floral expressiveness, vivid red fruit brightness, and an elegance and freshness that warmer years like 2020 approached from a different angle. For Domaine de Cristia's sandy-soil, northeast-facing Cristia lieu-dit, where natural freshness is the estate's foundational advantage, 2022 was a year where that freshness was amplified rather than challenged. The result — described by multiple critics in the same terms — is a Châteauneuf of balance, opulence, and vibrant fruit character that delivers the appellation's greatest qualities without the weight that less well-sited producers struggle to avoid.
Domaine de Cristia was founded in 1942 by Étienne Grangeon in Courthézon, in the northeastern reaches of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The domaine takes its name from the lieu-dit Le Cristia — a northeast-facing parcel of predominantly sandy soils, with sandy loam and clay components, that produces Grenache of distinctive silkiness, freshness, and floral aromatic intensity. The estate was expanded through three generations before Baptiste Grangeon began estate bottling in 1999, establishing the independent critical reputation that has grown consistently since. Baptiste manages the domaine with his sister Dominique and brother Florent.
The 2022 Classique blend is notably more complex than some prior vintages: 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre — the addition of Mourvèdre alongside the Syrah introducing a darker, more structured, and more aromatic dimension that the 2022 vintage's specific conditions particularly suit. The vines average 50 years of age, grown on the sandy loam and clay soils of the Cristia lieu-dit where the northeast-facing exposition provides the natural freshness and temperature moderation that prevents the southern Rhône's heat from producing over-ripe, heavy wines. All grapes are organically farmed under the certification the estate has maintained since 2008.
Vinification follows Cristia's established philosophy: 100% destemmed fruit fermented in concrete vats — the dominant method that preserves fruit purity and aromatic freshness — with the Grenache aged in concrete and the Syrah and Mourvèdre aged in barrels for 18 months before the final blend is assembled. The 2022's added Mourvèdre component contributes the dark fruit depth, structural tannin refinement, and aromatic complexity that Nicolas Greinacher's description of "orange blossom, garrigue, red cherry, strawberry and licorice" and Flatiron's description of "polished tannins, seamless mouthfeel and focused, juicy conclusion" collectively confirm. The result is a wine that Flatiron describes as "everything you want in a southern Rhône red — ripe, rich, and wildly satisfying, with a lift and elegance that make it more than just muscle."
Wine Advocate — 92 Points (2022) Joe Czerwinski's tasting describes "juicy black cherries, Provençal spices, resinous garrigue" with "medium to full-bodied weight, excellent balance and a good finish" — calling it "a fruity and juicy cuvée" that is "a great success for the vintage."
Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider (2022): "Peppery raspberries, flowers, cherries, and licorice form the perfume. The palate continues along that same line with soft, refined, fresh, and fruity raspberries, strawberries, and sweet, peppery, juicy kirsch. This is going to be delicious on release. The wine was made by blending 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah. Drink from 2025–2035."
Nicolas Greinacher (2022): "The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape ranks alongside the finest renditions of this wine ever produced at Domaine de Cristia. Bursting with orange blossom, garrigue, red cherry, strawberry and licorice, it strikes the perfect balance between opulence and freshness. Polished tannins, a seamless mouthfeel and a focused, juicy conclusion round it all up."
Yohan Castaing (2022): "A vibrant, elegant bouquet of dark cherries, berries, rose, violet and lilac mingled with fresh thyme notes. Medium to full-bodied, pure and clean, with an ample and fleshy core of fruit, suave texture and polished tannins."
Matt Walls (2022): "Impressively expressive, with melted down berry fruits infused with herbs — really fruity and ripe, but all well controlled and focused, with fine tannins. A lively and vibrant Tradition cuvée that should be great value for money."
Nose One of the most aromatic and florally expressive expressions from Cristia in recent memory — the 2022 vintage's signature floral quality immediately apparent. Orange blossom leads with a perfumed, almost heady freshness alongside rose, violet, and lilac that add a lifted, multi-layered floral dimension. Red and dark cherry follow — vivid, ripe, and precise — alongside fresh strawberry and the kirsch intensity that the sandy-soil Grenache delivers in a warm year with exceptional freshness preservation. Garrigue threads through the whole — resinous, wild, and distinctly Provençal — alongside peppery spice, licorice, and fresh thyme. The Mourvèdre's contribution adds a dark, slightly earthy aromatic depth beneath the brighter Grenache fruit and florals. The overall impression — confirmed by multiple critics independently — is of a wine that smells more vivid, more fresh, and more aromatic than the appellation's reputation for power would suggest.
Palate Ripe, rich, and "wildly satisfying" in Flatiron's precise description — medium to full-bodied with a silky, seamless texture that is the 2022 vintage's most consistent signature across the Cristia range. Raspberries and strawberries arrive first with soft, refined sweetness — peppery, juicy, and bright — before dark cherry and kirsch deepen the mid-palate into something richer and more concentrated. Garrigue herbs and fresh thyme add the savory dimension that roots this wine firmly in its appellation. Polished tannins provide a refined framework — present, well-integrated, and supporting the fruit rather than imposing upon it. The Syrah and Mourvèdre contribute structural depth, spice, and a focused finish energy that the pure Grenache blend lacks. Excellent balance between the richness of the fruit and the freshness of the acidity throughout.
Finish Focused, juicy, and lingering. The peppery rye spice and dark fruit carry the close together — kirsch, cracked pepper, and garrigue fading gradually and cleanly alongside a whisper of licorice that persists at the very end. The finish is longer and more focused than the wine's immediately approachable character might suggest — confirming the backbone and cellar potential that multiple critics identified in the drinking window of 2025–2035.
