Pic Saint-Loup is one of the most distinctive appellations in the Languedoc: a cooler, northern corner of the region, north of Montpellier, centered on the legendary limestone mountain that gives it its name. Its wines are known for freshness and balance rather than the heavy ripeness of the south. Domaine des Rocs is the latest acquisition of Vignobles Jeanjean, and Brigitte Jeanjean, who loves the Languedoc, its landscapes, history, and terroirs, had long been fascinated by the appellation, by this “legendary mountain,” and by its “fresh and balanced wines.” The cuvée name, Sancto Lupo, is Latin for “Saint Loup.” The wine is certified organic (Vin Biologique), and the wolf on the label is a nod to the name.
The 2022 is a blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache Noir grown on soils of limestone fragments. In the cellar, the grapes macerate for 12 to 15 days in tank, with daily pump-overs and temperatures controlled at 24-26°C. The wine is pneumatically pressed and aged nine months in tank to preserve fruit and freshness. The estate suggests it will keep four to six years, and recommends serving it at 14-16°C. The 2022 won a Bronze medal at the Challenge Millésime Bio.
A Quebec taster describes a wine in “a pretty ruby robe slightly violet,” with “beautiful floral notes and aromas of plum, blueberry and black cherry, studded with garrigue and a touch of pepper.” The palate is “fresh and well fed by subtly gourmand fruity flavors and undeniable purity,” with “satiny and enveloping tannins” and a finish that is “clean and precise” and “stretches on long.” Another description of the 2022 finds an “intense color with violet reflections,” aromas of “red and black fruit, spices, garrigue and leather,” and a palate that is “powerful and structured, with fine tannins and good length.” The estate’s notes summarize the house style: “generous and very aromatic. Garrigue scents, licorice and black olive,” with a palate that is “soft and velvety showing a nice minerality,” “discreet tannins,” and a “long and expressive” finish. For context, James Suckling’s note on the 2024 vintage describes “brambleberries and thyme on the nose of this fresh red,” “medium-bodied with lightly rustic tannins and a crunchy finish.” It’s a fresh, savory, herb-scented organic red that’s easy to pair with lamb, mushrooms, and grilled beef.
